Why the Rangers...
Should not make a trade. There have been many fanposts saying that the Rangers should trade for this and give up this. Or Rangers should stay the course. I believe the Rangers should, "stay the course". Here are a few reasons why.
1) Earlier today the Flyers made a trade for the defenseman Nicklas Grossman. They gave up a 2012 second round pick and a 2013 third round pick. Grossmann a solid d-man indeed who plays 19 minutes a game and has some good size, but giving up two higher round picks for him is way too much. Also, Domonic Moore was traded to the Sharks for a second round pick. Moore, a solid two way player with a great work ethic, but this season he only has 4 goals and is -10. The point of this is that the Rangers will have to give up way too much for whatever they get. Teams know the Rangers are a top team who wants more scoring so they will drive the price way up. Rangers should not be quick to give up top prospects and draft picks. It should be a deep draft and we want to stay contenders for a long time.
2) This one is simple. Do the Rangers really need more help. They are the best team in the league with the best defense and goalie. The team chemistry is great, why would we want to change that. I think we have enough scoring as is. Gabby, Step, Cally, and Richards are all capable of carrying the offense and have before.
3) Team Chemistry. Do not break up the group. Many fans mention Dubisnky's name in trade talks. Sure he's not having the offensive year we all expected but he is way too important to the team. He's great on the PK, guys on the team love him, he's got some offense, and he's a bitch to play against. He is part of the identity of the team. The kind of guy the opposing team hates to play against.(See Flyers) He sticks up for his teamates and plays well in big games. Whether it's against the Bruins, Flyers, or Penguins you can count on Dubinksy playing a physical game and will provide offense. These are teams that the Rangers will probably see in the post-season and against those teams Dubby puts up 2g 4a 6p 20pim. This is the guy we want on our blue collar, hard-working, bad ass, talented team. No? Team Chemistry is so important. Look at recent champions in all of sports who stuck with team chemistry instead of getting the big name players at the trade deadline or dismantalling the team for big free agents. New York Giants, Boston Bruins, Dallas Mavericks, St. Louis Cardinals. These teams stayed the course and won. Not the Miami Heat, not the Boston Red Sox, not the Philidelphia Eagles. Stay with home-grown talent and dont trade them. The Rangers have been doing it the last few years, why change now?

Getting a depth defenseman or an expiring contract won't kill us.
The first trades of trading seasons are always very expensive for the teams looking to improve. The longer the Rangers wait the better deal they will get.

Yup
Depth on the blue line and a vet with an expiring contract to play on the PP and provide some offense. Both can be done without subtracting the starting line-up.
Story #141142 on trading or not trading.
Can’t wait for the 28th.

Hate to say it, but probably has to be said.
However, with that being said, there is a lot to talk about with the Deadline coming up so I don’t blame people for posting things like this. I’d just probably prefer it if people noticed the FanPost that has 13 recs which is about the same thing.

Well each person wants their voice heard and starts a Fanpost, when the reality is that posts like these could be consolidated as replies on an existing thread.
im looking forward to not looking forward to 500+ post threads and fanposts about after the deadline and how we did too much or didn’t do enough. It’ll get worse before it gets better.

dbmaven has a long history here, and while he may not post much, when he does, he’s one of the guys that people should pay attention too.

No worries! Don’t think of it as “annoying” people. Never be ashamed or afraid to share your thoughts on something, even if it is already being discussed elsewhere. Just try and make sure to have a very different opinion or perspective in a new post, otherwise just bring your thoughts to the first post and share them in the comments.

with all this talk of team chemistry, I’m assuming that I am one of the few people on this blog that was at adult age (not necessarily an adult) during the 1994 trade deadline purge where 25% of the line-up was altered. if this is the reaction now to a potential trade then I can’t imagine your reactions to what occurred in 1994. Kevin would have had the “cliff” picture out every other post (love that pic, lol). P.S. 1994 worked out fine though these are different circumstances. Bottom line is I trust Sather and Co to do the right thing (to trade or not trade). P.S.S. I see 500+ posts then I ignore it. Now that could be an incentive for you all to do that, lol.
I was an adult in 1994 – so I guess I’m a couple years older than you. And that’s why I wrote the fanpost I did. Management mortgaged the future badly to take one shot at the cup.
If you want a consistently good team that can challenge every year – or be considered a ‘dynasty’, they have to stay the course.
If you want one shot to win and don’t care about next year or the next 5, sure – go ahead. Blow it up.
My opinion which I know is not shared by all. And I’m good with that.
basic rule of thumb: you go for it in the current year without destroying the next 10 years. as a matter of fact the 1994 team was competitive through the 1997 team when they went to the conf finals. it was their DRAFTING that killed them and failed to replenish the team. inclusive of the Zubov trade which was horrendous.
While it is a fair point and as dbmaven pointed it was going all-in for that one year it was also to make us a grittier, deeper team for the playoffs. One could argue that this team already has that.
Though I don’t agree that the team should not make any trades, someone to replace Sauer and give the back end better depth and experience would be a trade I would consider, I do agree that we should not blow it all up like in ’94

I guess my point is the “team chemistry” angle is important but a bit over blown. again, my preference is for Dubi and AA to put the damn puck in the net and then we have nothing to talk about. but they’re not so we do (have something to talk about).
The Rangers are playing very well but they still have a lot of areas that need improvement and we shouldn’t be overly cautious if it means making the right move. Now, that said, there are some guys who are too key. I can’t believe I’m actually about to say this, but there is no way I would trade MDZ right now. There is no way I would trade Kreider until we see what he’s capable of. Obviously I wouldn’t trade McD or Girardi or Staal. Hank, of course. Don’t touch Gabby, Cally, Richards or Step. Please try to do everything in our power to keep Dubi.
Everyone else is potentially available for the right person in the right combination.
Excellent Brooks article today
Rangers cannot afford rash decision on Nash
Blog: Slap Shots
A slightly different question:
If Rick Nash had been an unrestricted free agent last summer, would anyone have thought it a great idea for the Rangers to sign the power winger to a seven-year, $54.6 million contract carrying a cap hit of $7.8 million per?
Would general manager Glen Sather have really gone all in on Nash, making him not only the highest-paid player on the team, but the fifth-highest paid player (per cap hit) in the NHL while committing to him through 2017-18?
And if the answer to that question is even "not likely," let alone, "probably not," much less, "are you nuts?" even while acknowledging free agents get premium prices because teams don’t have to relinquish valuable assets in order to add them, then why would Sather make that commitment now when the cost will include prime beef?
Let’s put aside the subject of chemistry and instead address math as it applies to the East-leading Rangers, who learned what it’s like to have a collective target on their backs when blitzed out of the gate in last night’s 4-2 loss at the Garden to the desperate Blackhawks.
For if the Blueshirts were to acquire Nash, they would be complicating their ability to keep the core of the team together over the next three summers when the contracts of 12 important players — including Henrik Lundqvist, Ryan Callahan, Marian Gaborik, Ryan McDonagh, Derek Stepan, Michael Del Zotto and Carl Hagelin — will expire, with most in line for considerable bumps in pay.
It is impossible to predict the outcome of the negotiations that will produce the new collective bargaining agreement that will go into effect next season. But even if the percentage of the players’ take is reduced, no one should count on a rollback of salaries this time.
This means that $7.8 million would remain $7.8 million. This means that acquiring Nash would effectively shut the door on the Rangers being able to bid on Ryan Suter or Zach Parise if either hits the open market this summer. This means that the Rangers would be out of the picture if and when Shea Weber becomes available.
This means that the Blueshirts would be out when Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf and Jordan Staal could become unrestricted free agents in 2013 and thus, might be available leading up to next season’s deadline when the Rangers and their needs will be much easier to define.
This situation is not analogous to the one at the 1994 trade deadline, when no team in the NHL was more desperate to win than the Rangers and every job in the organization — including Mark Messier’s — would have been in jeopardy had that team not ended the 54-year-drought.
This isn’t 1994, when coach Mike Keenan did not believe the team was equipped with enough blue-collar workers to get through the grind and authorized moving young Tony Amonte for a couple of role players, one of whom was, of course, Stephane Matteau.
This isn’t then, when Keenan did not believe Mike Gartner had the Right Stuff, and so insisted on moving the sniper for warhorse Glenn Anderson.
Forget the cost in assets that would not include Boston College’s effectively untouchable Chris Kreider, but almost certainly would feature Brandon Dubinsky, who was the Rangers’ best forward in last year’s playoff series against the Caps.
Instead simply consider the cost of the contract and the pure commitment in cap space over the next seven years it would take to get Nash, whose acquisition would represent not just tinkering with the chemistry, but fundamentally changing the formula.
There is no reason to rush to judgment here. Just because Sather has a lifetime contract doesn’t mean he should give one to Nash.

At this point I don’t think any of us really want Nash here because of the cost of players and cap hit. Sather is not going to do this unless the price is right….end of story on Nash….however, watching the breakdown last night, we all can see the need for another scorer. I’d prefer that scorer to be Jeff Carter, he will be had for less and the cap hit is managable with Dubi going the other way. The bottom line is this……..some of us think that Chemistry will be uprooted with the absence of one player……its not going to happen, Carter is also a tremendous upgrade. You might see Tyutin come back as well.
Absolute Worst Ranger Fan!!!!!!....yet incredibly realistic and usually correct.
