NHL Trade Rumors: Rick Nash Sweepstakes Heating Up Again

Rick Nash met with the media at MSG for the first time this season, last night before the Blue Jackets took to the ice against the New York Rangers. Nash failed to comment on multiple questions regarding his stance on the trade talk that has developed over the last couple of weeks.

As of today, things have heated up once again, and it seems to be getting interesting. Earlier this afternoon, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch quoted GM Scott Howson, stating that they are waiting for the right deals, and that they are getting closer. He stated while they may be getting closer to a deal, it's not totally there yet.

Not to long after that, Dennis Bernstein from The Fourth Period stated that the Kings have upped their offer to Jonathan Bernier, Jack Johnson, and Andrei Loktionov to the Jackets. However there are no signs that there have been any recent talks regarding the Rangers, but who really knows what's going to happen.

What are your guys thoughts on all of this?

if the kings have offered bernier, JJ, and loktionov then howson is just going around to the interested teams to see if they will beat that offer. i dont see how columbus doesnt pull the trigger on that. they get the goalie of the future they need, a solid defenseman (i know many on this site dont like his own zone play, but he is a decent young dman), and a top forward prospect that will pair up nicely with yakupov/grigerenko. howson has to make that trade and theres no way the rangers would be willing to beat that

Yup

No Sather just has to realize that this isn’t a pissing contest worth winning and just let the Kings make the trade

Columbus now wants Lundqvist, Staal, Del Zotto, Stepan, Krieder, Erixon, Thomas, Dubinsky, Jeremy Lin, the Ranger’s 1st pick for the next five years and part of the deal is Nash gets to bang all the players wives, girlfriends, and sisters.

In my opinion Nash going to the Kings is the best case scenario for the Rangers. Getting him would be a mistake because we would have to give up too much. A move by the Kings would keep Nash in the west and away from the Flyers.

by NYR-BD-RC-HL-MS on Feb 20, 2012 2:36 PM EST reply actions

him going to the flyers is the beat case scenario….they’ll still be giving up 5 goals a game and theylle have to let Giroux go when he needs to be resigned because of no cap space

Think about now before the future

Having him go to the flyers now would make them a much stronger contender this year. We own them. I’d rather have him stay in the west.

I’d much rather keep Rick Nash as far from the Eastern Conference as possible

Except for that one shot on the PP, I felt Nash was invisible last night.

by JordyNYR on Feb 20, 2012 5:54 PM EST up reply actions

Okay maybe invisible is the wrong word. He didn’t seem to be a major factor for them. He certainly didn’t dominate.

by JordyNYR on Feb 20, 2012 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

This^
1. We’d have to give up too much in both current players (chemistry IS real factor, as the team itself is talking about it a lot), and (good potential) future talent (which we hope will lead us down a road like Detroit….long term success and many years of legitimate shots at multiple cups).
2. The cap hit jeapordizes signing key players in the years to come;
3. Nash is (likely) at or just past peak.
He’s just not worth it.
All this can’t be done soon enough.

Take the deal Howson

LA is giving CBJ everything they need (a young, solid goaltender and young defense) and gives LA the scoring touch they simply don’t have.

Take the deal and let Ranger fans exhale for the first time in two weeks

Columbus gave up Voracek a 1st and Third for Carter and now you think he wont cost a roster player? No chance. Thye wont just give him away. That doesnt help them at all.

by DieselCane22 on Feb 20, 2012 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

columbus has to trade him. hes been so unhappy in columbus and such a cancer that they are gonna have to get rid of him even if they dont get the same assets for him that they gave up to get him

by BigB22 on Feb 20, 2012 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

He was a cancer in philly too thats why they moved him. Everyone goes on about our chemistry here and how great it is. Why would you want to bring a bad apple in becuase of that. Carters not exactly setting the world on fire.

by DieselCane22 on Feb 20, 2012 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

Again, says you, with your Philly locker room knowledge.

Sorry but your argument doesn’t have legs. Why sign “locker room cancer” to a 10 year deal in the first place? You don’t do that and cancer doesn’t form overnight. He was with Philly for 5 years before that contract. And why did they trade Richards also? Now he was cancer too? Sorry but it doesn’t fly.

As far as setting the world on fire, he is doing about the same as Nash. Scoring slightly less but defense much better.

by BigB22 on Feb 20, 2012 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

Im not making it up. If he is so awesome why did they trade him???? A young offensive guy like that? Richards and Carter were rumored to have been locker room issues, seperated themselves from the team. Its not just ME saying it. Theres tons of stuff out there. Pictures too. I didnt just make it up. And now hes sulking in Columbus and you want that guy? Sorry pass.

Your argument holds zero water. Nash has been way better numbers wise.

Oh and 3 Rangers last night raved about Nash. MCD, MDZ and Stralman all said he was excellent, hard to match up against and really tough to play against.

Noone mentioned Carter.

by DieselCane22 on Feb 20, 2012 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

So why did Philly give both of these guys long contracts?

And no, he hasn’t been “way better” numbers wise and he certainly hasn’t been $2.6m better.

by BigB22 on Feb 20, 2012 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

Players only answer questions they are asked. Carter hasn’t been mentioned in NY press regarding trades.

by BigB22 on Feb 20, 2012 4:52 PM EST up reply actions

It doesnt matter what he was asked. Rangers played singled out Nashs play. Noone mentioned Carter. Heres the other MAJOR problem with Carter. After this season his no movement clause kicks in on his contract. So if he ends up being a malcontent were STUCK with him for the next NINE years.

Nash this year is 19/21 for 40 points.

Carter is 12/9 for 21.

So yes thats much better this year and Nash has better career stats. You can argue all day if hes worth the 2.6 and theres no right answer.

by DieselCane22 on Feb 20, 2012 4:59 PM EST up reply actions

Actually, being traded from Philly to CBJ dropped his NMC, it will not kick in this summer or ever again.

Nash has played 21 more games than Carter this year.

Yes, he has better career stats, but you are comparing a 60 pt player and a 70 pt player. Nash gets paid like he is a top 5 player in the league, a 90 pt player. He is NEVER going to be that. Carter plays up to his salary and Nash doesn’t.

And seriously, when a reporter asks “What do you think of Nash?” you think a player is going to respond with what he thinks about Carter? Nonsense.

by BigB22 on Feb 20, 2012 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

From my understanding you are mostly correct.

As long as he has not hit the eligibility requirements of UFA a NMC can not be put into effect. Once traded the team he goes too does NOT have to honor the NMC that has yet to go into effect. But it could honor it if they wanted to.

So it is possible that CBJ decided to honor it and then if they trade him once he has hit the UFA qualifications the new team would be bound by it.

But for all intents and purposes I doubt CBJ would honor it and even if they did it looks like he will be traded shortly so the new team would have the option to not honor it as well.

by Blueshirt in Paris on Feb 21, 2012 7:09 AM EST up reply actions

multiple reports claim that his NMC was waived when he was traded last summer.

he was traded along with richards because they traded for bryz’s rights and they wanted to sign him to a big contract, therefore they needed to move other big contracts..

by jdileone9 on Feb 21, 2012 9:40 AM EST up reply actions

It was not in effect, so it did not need to be waived in order for them to trade him.

You can put in a NMC in your contract but it does not take effect until you meet the qualifications (age/years played) for UFA.

It is spelled out very clearly in the CBA.

i meant to say voided not waived. but okay i didn’t know that. idk id still take a chance on him

by jdileone9 on Feb 21, 2012 10:21 AM EST up reply actions

Carter was injured.

Maybe if you spread that out over 82 games played, or compare career averages, or something other than such simple statistics which by themselves mean absolutely nothing, we could gauge their value.

I honestly dont know the context George but if you read the comments they all called him a dynamic player, big, fast, tough to defend, very complimentary. That sounds good to me. Do you still think Carter is more attractive given his NMC and the fact his deal is like 5 years longer than Nashs? And there is one year difference in age?

Alos I understand all guys and positions aren’t created equal but Hockey Canada feels Nash is one of their 9 best forwards and Carter isnt part of that pool. Does that say something as far as comparison in players? Just a thought.

by DieselCane22 on Feb 20, 2012 5:23 PM EST up reply actions

I honestly dont know the context George but if you read the comments they all called him a dynamic player, big, fast, tough to defend, very complimentary.

Right, but I’m saying they may not have had anything to say about Carter because no one asked about him. Obviously with Nash rumors swirling + the game winner, there would’ve been a lot of questions regarding players’ opinions.

Carter didn’t make the team, but he was the first person they went to when Getzlaf’s injury nearly kept him out, so while yes, there’s obviously a difference (no one, including me, disputes that), again, the difference isn’t as large as one would typical think based on respective reputations.

Only CBJ could tell you if the decided to honor it. But doesn’t matter in this context because even if they did and they traded him now the team getting him does not have to honor it.

it just doesnt add up to me. i think/hope this is just a smokescreen and sather has something up his sleeve

Well, there’s a bright side to it, depending on how you look at it:

As teams drop out, the price will go down.

Redden, Avery, Wolski for Nash.

Oh wait, they want prospects:

Unless it is a two horse race (with LA) and a bidding war. Hopefully Glen pumps the brakes. We aren’t desperate, LA is.

I still think it is a ploy by Sather. I think he is inflating the price LA pays for Nash, helping CBJ get a better return so that we can take Carter more cheaply.

by BigB22 on Feb 20, 2012 6:06 PM EST up reply actions

i'm sure sather is tempted

i would hate to be dubi right now, knowing that he is the most likely roster player to go, and to go from the best team in the east to the worst team in the league.

Gotta be the single worst feeling ever as a hockey player. #1 a few inches from a cup under your belt to #30 with no chance in hell watching your career die on a terrible team

Dubi will get over it. Imagine what Gartner felt like.

“Despite his long impressive career, Gartner never won the Stanley Cup or played in the Cup Finals, never won an NHL award, and was never named to the postseason All-Star Team, being one of the few Hockey Hall of Fame inductees to hold this distinction. Only Phil Housley has played in more games (1495) than Gartner without winning the Cup.”

by nyrangerfan521 on Feb 20, 2012 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

thats the whole point send both if they want a deal but Wolski needs to go

by Zesta02 on Feb 20, 2012 5:23 PM EST up reply actions

i dont get it. wolski is a FA at the end of the year. you can just let him walk at the end of the season. he wont affect the cap this season if a trade involving dubi is made

by nyrangerfan521 on Feb 20, 2012 5:25 PM EST up reply actions

wolski is a chip becuase teams like expiring deals its importan for relief next year

by DieselCane22 on Feb 20, 2012 5:26 PM EST up reply actions

hell of a haul for columbus

Johnson is a young first pair d man. bernier is young and has the potential to be a franchise goalie. Its once in a blue moon that one of those can be had, usually he would be untouchable. LA, please throw in a high pick and seal this thing

The thought of Jack Johnson and Steve Mason sharing the ice together at any point (even if Mason is the backup to Bernier) has me giddy. You might see a 20-spot put up against them.

I feel like the rangers are offering up erixon in this package and CBJ is saying they want DZ or Mcdonagh which is holding it up. I dunno, could be wrong but it feels like that to me. Who knows, hope LA comes in and seals the deal. Somehow though I feel like Rick Nash is a Ranger within the next few days.

by BrentA94 on Feb 20, 2012 5:33 PM EST reply actions

that would be stupid of Sather to give up MDZ or Mdongah

they are such important pieces to our defensive core, not sure where’d this team be without em

Not at the reported price. Sather has proven that he has a bit of sense in the trade market. The proposed price for Nash makes absolutely no sense for the Rangers.

by I.LikeMittens on Feb 20, 2012 5:40 PM EST up reply actions

I’d love to know where they stand right now. Proposed was dubi, kreider, a pick, mcd/dz/step or something to that effect right?? I don’t recall seeing any updated asking price, just that they were getting closer to a deal.

by BrentA94 on Feb 20, 2012 5:52 PM EST up reply actions

By getting closer

I didn’t mean necessarily with the rangers btw…

by BrentA94 on Feb 20, 2012 5:52 PM EST up reply actions

Well I think if you asked most people, stupid would be an understatement at this point.

by BrentA94 on Feb 20, 2012 5:41 PM EST reply actions

F..Nash.....don,t trade..

I hope that Sather has some wisdom and don,t trade..for Nash, too much money..wait after season.let Nash go to L.A….!

Saw this at the Kings blog

Maybe hypotheticals, but solves things for us

Send Dustin Brown, Dustin Penner, Jarret Stoll, Jonathan Bernier, Thomas Hickey and a 1st to Columbus for Jeff Carter and Rick Nash.
AND send Jack Johnson to the Wild for Dany Heatley.

Rangers FTW!

by BleedsRangerBlue on Feb 20, 2012 7:00 PM EST reply actions

as bad as the Kings need scoring

so do the wild, so Healtey would probably not work.

If I were the Jackets I’d do that deal though. A line of Kopitar and Nash would be nice, as well as Richards and Carter. Funny how 3 flyers in Gagne, Richards, and Carter could be reunited.

I've resigned myself to the fact that Rick Nash is going to be a Ranger
