What The New York Rangers Need From Brandon Dubinsky

Last season, Brandon Dubinsky had the best season of his NHL career. Now, after scoring only six goals during the regular season, Dubinsky is the subject of trade talks, possibly for Rick Nash or Jeff Carter of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Let's assume Dubinsky isn't traded for this post. Here's what the Rangers need from Brandon Dubinsky. Join me for more after the jump...

Star-divide

In this goal, Brandon Dubinsky goes coast to coast and beats multiple defensemen on his way to a much needed goal vs. the New York Islanders. This is a signature goal for Dubinsky, muscle his way to the net and wrist it past the goalie. It's the type of play Dubinsky has been hesitant to make, but needs to learn to make again.

This goal is from last season, and Dubinsky isn't even the player that scores. I was at this game, and marveled at Dubinsky's tenacity and power heading towards the net, something he has not shown this season. He does not score himself, but he sets Mats Zuccarello up for his first career goal, and the game winner.

The Rangers need Dubinsky to not just score, but to try to get to the net and cause problems for the defensemen of the opposing teams. Dubinsky's hesitance throughout the season to play physical and really drive towards the net has hurt the team, and has caused the team to consider trading him, in addition to his new contract.

I want to see the Dubinsky I saw in those two videos. If not, I want to see Dubinsky on another team.

Don't disagree

That Dubi needs to add some nasty to his game and get in the ugly areas so that he can create chaos and create space for other players. I’d like him to go hard to the net more often, he is a strong dude and can seriously help the team by driving hard to the net.

I am not sure that I am ready or want to see him in another team’s jersey, and if he is in another jersey I want it to be a team that we don’t play very often. I think a lot of us are attached to Dubinsky because of what he and Ryan Callahan have come to mean to this team. They were the two guys (along with Staalsy) that the youth movement really focused on and was built around. That being said, he does have to produce and soon.

Maybe I should write an article about Doobs like I did about Arty, that seemed to get Arty back on track.

I think part of problem with Dubi getting “some nasty to his game” is that there’s been too much emphasis on him being “definitely not a wing”. Dubi is a great 3rd line center, if he’s on the top 2 lines, his role is more about doing the dirty work for the skill guys, not being the finisher on his own. Torts The team needs to admit they screwed up, let him go back to playing HIS game (offense when he’s hot, physical when he’s not, defense always) and bite the bullet on the fact they overpaid him.

For all the talk of who would go, and who would stay, in a possible trade Dubi’s name always comes up 1st, but I think he’d be the harder to replace then some of the other young roster guys who’ve been mentioned (AA, Hagelin, Staal, McD). Dubi might make more then he should for what he does, but we don’t really have a guy who can fill in for Dubi if we move him. I’m not saying we’d never find that guy, or even that it would be hard to find in the offseason, but right now, i think he’s the one guy who would be most likely to mess up the chemistry this season.

If we make a move for a top 6 forward, someone is getting bumped from top 6, and whoever that is, isn’t going to bring what Dubi brings in the bottom 6. If you send a guy from the top 6 (AA, Hagelin) you can replace them with the big signing. If you deal Staal or McD, Staal is playing 3rd pair mins as it is, so either Staal slides into the top 4 if McD goes, or the top 4 stays intact if Staals goes. My feeling is scoring helps Hank more then ANY combo of defensemen back there, and we’re gonna need scoring to win in the playoffs.

by BuckarooClub on Feb 23, 2012 3:56 PM EST up reply actions

I think he was overpaid and you raise some good points about the team having some lofty expectations of Dubi. Realistically he is never going to be a guy that breaks through a 30 goal ceiling consistently, and if he does it won’t happen often. At least I don’t see that in his game, especially lately.

Overpaid this year? Sure.

Overpaid at the time he was signed? I thought George had a couple of articles that argued that he was paid correctly.

I think Dubinsky is a case of the volatility of production of 2nd tier players. They can be 40-60 point guys any given year.

I like Dubi alot, he’s a fun player to watch when he’s in it, he hustles, and he’s not scared of anyone/anything. He’s really a throwback type of player. I think we would have been better served keeping him in that roll, but instead we tried to squeeze every last goal out of him, and try to shape him into being a scoring wing.

by BuckarooClub on Feb 23, 2012 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think there’s a GM in the league that would give up McD or Staal before they gave up Dubinsky. Possible exception is Nashville if Staal and McD were backing up Weber and Suter.

by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Feb 23, 2012 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

I’m just saying, looking at what we have now, we have enough bodies to keep together a solid top 4 on D, we’ve got a ton more guys vying for those spots in the future, we could deal from the D now and improve our offense to help a cup run without leaving any holes in the lineup.

by BuckarooClub on Feb 23, 2012 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

For this year? There’s absolutely no way they consider moving McD unless its like Weber/Suter in return or Malkin/Giroux. Even a diminished Staal still has value to the team if for nothing else than he takes minutes that would otherwise be filled by Bickel and Eminger.

None of the future studs on blueline are ready this year to take an NHL role. If they felt Erixon was ready for a heavy workload he’d be doing it right now (as we saw with McD last year).

For next year, who knows what the team will look like (especially after the trade deadline). There’s the chance that Sauer takes a long time to recover so you’d need to keep Erixon and McIlrath around to either take his spot as well as more depth.

i am glad to see fans speaking up for the players instead of bashing those who are having down years. like i said earlier, everyone wanted Gabby out of town last year and Dubi was the best thing coming…hell, he helped us stay somewhat afloat against the Caps in the playoffs last year. look at the other teams that won cups, pens, devils, blackhawks. they won by keeping core players together, regardless of slumps or missing time with injuries.

by Xcalibre on Feb 23, 2012 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

i’m sure everyone knows i like Dubi, i’ll reiterate what i’ve written in other posts. i don’t see him as having a down year. yes, he’s not scoring as much (yet), but he’s been fantastic in other aspects of the game (PK, forecheck, hits, +/-), few players want a piece of him (ask mike richards), and come playoff time he’s the type of player that can make a difference in a tough series.

Not a down year? It’s like you are dating a woman because she is smart AND beautiful, and you date for a couple of years and then finally get married. The year after you get married, she gets hugely obese. She’s still quite sharp, maybe smarter than when you met her. But she isn’t beautiful.. borderline homely. Sure you still love her. But she is having a down year.

The question is, do you divorce her and start dating that chick you’ve known for years and always had a thing for, even though you know she is gonna be high maintenance, spending all your cash? Or do you wait a couple of years with no sex, for your wife to realize the relationship sucks on her own so she can initiate walking away… and then you go get some hot young ass who just turned 21 but you been watching since she was 18?

Hrm… that was originally going to be like a 2 sentence metaphor…

I just find it irritating when there’s a conversation going on in the post below this and people are making valid points or pointing out factual flaws in others arguments that may be pertinent to other members of the community; only for those to just get washed away and off the front page in matter of hours because a post like this which could easily be summed up in 3 sentences in the comment section of another story, ends up pushing them down.
So Moshe and I have to make the same argument for why we like Carter over Nash over an over again because the place where that debate is being held is constantly moving before everyone gets a chance to read it/weigh in.
Just saying.

You know the point of a website is to add content every ~3 or so hours, right? That’s what the average SB Nation blog does, and that’s what we’ve done. 10 AM to 3 PM is a longer jump than we’re even suggested to do.

We’re trying to cover every aspect of the team, and Dubinsky is an extremely important aspect at this time. Ignoring that because people are arguing below would be not doing my role.

No. When did every website come together and agree that that was what defined their existence?

I am fine with adding content, but it should be something that makes the previous article worth bumping, not just content for contents sake. I’m not sure how many people find what essentially amounts to two videos and “Hey brandon Dubinsky, DO THIS!!!” enlightening. If the point is just to get people talking about him you could have just wrote “Brandon Dubinsky is having a bad year” and then “DISCUSS” in the story.

What you call that, I call two videos showing what he should be doing, analyzing the videos and explaining how he has not done that this season and how that needs to change if he wants to stay in New York.

And it’s well known throughout the blogosphere that quantity is important if you want to keep up with the other blogs.

Right now his trade value isn’t as high as it should be.I don’t want to see him traded just because he isn’t producing. He alone isn’t going to bring back anything of great value in return. If hes part of a bigger package that brings in a bigger piece ,then I have no problem with that.If he remains a Ranger then he has to play like he has a chip on his shoulder.

That's really the point

I don’t think most people are in TRAIDZ ALL DA PLAYERZ mode with Dubi. I think he has become an expendable piece that has ALOT of trade value. I love Dubi and I’ll say it over and over but it’s not very often that you have a guy in Dubi who is both expendable and valuable in that you can get value in return.

Opposite Directions with Big Bucks

Both Cally and Dubi signed for big money in the offseason. Callahan has brought his game up a level and is earning everything he gets paid.
Dubi seems to be coasting, not playing his former, tenacious, gritty style. Almost like- “Hey- I make $4mm/year- I dont have to do that anymore”.
Maybe Dubi is still better that he wasnt discussed for the “C” let alone getting an “A”.

Thoughts on Nash deal

Sather is playing coy with the “untouchable” player announcement. Sather wants Nash and is willing, in my opinion, to hopefully part with Del Zotto. He is acting like he is taking a hard stance to protect his top prospects. As we get close to the deadline, he will “cave in” and offer Del Zotto along with Thomas or McIlrath in the Dubi package. Loss of Del Zotto does nothing to hurt us defensively (we are actually better off without him on D – Malkin will be upset though that he gone from NY) Nash offense > than Dubi + Del Zotto. This is the deal I believe Sather wants but doesnt want to be to appear too anxious on at this point. Also Rangers need another good Dman – Kubina would have been ideal- not sure what Sather has in mind here.

. . . but that first vid reminds me of the Patriots letting Bradshaw score. The Isles — esp. Tavares and Parenteau — said, “Please, Brandon, go right ahead. Be our guest. Skate through us or around us, whatever you prefer.”

If unlike football there’s no strategic reason in hockey for letting someone score, the Isles were altogether inept on that play.

Dubi is not moving on the offensive end and has that deer in headlights look. he needs to be aggressive and force the issue as opposed to laying back. he shows the aggressiveness every once in a while but why he can’t do it consistently is baffling. that’s why he’s on the trade block for nash. if he were scoring his 20-25 goals then there would be no need for Nash or anyone else.

Reuniting with Mike Richards and getting rid of that awful defenseman in JJ.
They should just make it a JJ, Loktionov, 1st, and 2nd for Carter and Umberger.
Then the Flyers west team would be assembled. Just need Gagne back from injury.

Holding onto Kreider is key, because having Nash’s contract IS workable assuming Gaborik doesn’t come back and Kreider doesn’t bomb. It still makes things tight, but I think Glen will find a way to keep the RFA money down with a little /wink/wink that things will be taken care of down the road.

Very true

But he’s played parts of at least 3 seasons I believe, and I’m not expecting him to dominate or anything, but you know, maybe have a decent stretch of games. Idk, I just think Bernier will be a decent NHL goalie, but nothing close to elite. He just hasn’t shown many people why he is regarded as the best goaltending prospect.

All things considered, I think LA is going to wind up winning this thing big-time. Johnson is a defensive sieve, so limiting his fuck-ups and having Quick is huge, and now with some added firepower, they’re going to be a dangerous team down the stretch. Watch for them to make a run at it.

1. I’m going to watch The Departed, will Nash be a Ranger by the time I get back on my laptop?

2. Who gains more leverage from Carter trade, CBJ or NYR

3. Should CBJ have traded Carter or Nash first?

1. No most likely done Sunday since the Rangers are playing both tomorrow and saturday

2. NYR had more leverage being patient now Slats can bend Howson over a barrel for Nash

3. Should have traded Nash first to set the market and then get teams to over pay for Carter

1. At this point, fuck it, if it’s not going to cost us anything horrible, do it. I don’t care anymore.

2. I think we do, slightly, because I think LA won their trade, and I think Howson is a FUCKING MORON.

3. Don’t think it matters, as long as Carter didn’t go to one of the teams gunning for Nash, because then there’s less of a bidding war.

1. No, 2. Cbj, they can hold out until the draft. 3. I think whoever went 1st would drive up the price of the other. In this case Nash should have gone 1st considering he had the higher value to start.

by Dizzybizzy on Feb 23, 2012 9:10 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Plus, they traded Carter to one of the teams going for Nash, which means less people pursuing Nash, means less chance of a bidding war=lesser return for Nash.

I found this funny on rotoworld, a first round pick and a jack johnson haha

The Columbus Blue Jackets have traded Jeff Carter to the Los Angeles Kings in exchanged for first round draft pick and a Jack Johnson.

With hindsight being 20/20, it’s fair to say that the Blue Jackets would have been better off if they had never acquired Jeff Carter from Philadelphia over the summer. Not only did Carter and Columbus as a team fail to live up to expectations, but Columbus gave up Jakub Voracek, the eighth overall pick in the 2011 draft, who turned out to be Sean Couturier, and a third round pick. Carter will be reunited with Mike Richards, which should, along with the fact that he’s playing for a contender, help Carter from a morale perspective. We wouldn’t be surprised if Carter ends the season on a high note.

What would you guys trade for Dustin Brown?

If Carts fetched Jack Johnson and a 1st you think Brown can be had without giving up Dubinsky? That’d be awesome. Fans are very disgruntled with Brown.

My proposal for Brown is Thomas, 2nd rounder, and Valentenko.

I think they’d take a chance on Wolski, personally. Chance to add even more scoring, expiring contract.

Wolski, 1st, throw in a decent prospect.

Wolski, MZA, Bickel and a latter 1st (’13 or ’14). Cap hit meets, latter first gives them a pick they may lose to CBJ.

If Nash winds up in SJ, as some rumors have it, then I do not want to trade ANY of our youth for a rent a player. I just as well go with what we have and see how far it takes us. It will mean some guys(and they know who they are) will have to step up their game. Hopefully we can sign Krieder when his college season ends next month, and throw him in there for the final ten games or so and see if he give this team a bolt of energy.

I'd love to get Dustin Brown

For Brown, I’d send over something like Dubinsky (if they can take his cap hit), McIlrath, and a pick…maybe next years 2nd round or so.

If they can’t take Dubi, then I think JT Miller becomes involved in that deal somehow. You could do Wolski (as the rental), Miller, and mid level prospect, mid/low pick (4-7)

The asking price for Brown will be a bit inflated obviously because of the lack of sellers and his cheap cap hit.

Now, I’m not saying lets trade JT Miller, who I do very much like as a prospect. But getting Dustin Brown would mean we’d more than likely have to send back a young player or prospect due to their salary cap.

What do you think it would take for a package of Dustin Brown?

1. Cap issues now that they have Carter, possibly wanna clear up space.
2. Now they have Carter and no more Johnson, possibly another defenseman, like someone said earlier a two way guy.
3. Yet again, with Carter, and recently getting Richards over the summer, and a new head coach, maybe they want a change of leadership with the way the season has gone. Brown is having a down year himself as well and they might not see as much as a need for him.

My best George impression, yes I know pathetic.

So in the end, Howson dealt Jakub Voracek, Sean Couturier and prospect Nick Cousins for Jack Johnson and a late-first round pick. Huh.

You’re hilarious!

My old high school classmate who lives in San Diego told me Brown has wanted out for about three weeks, and craves coming East.

Double-edged sword, being pissed at the GM. He may get his wish, and come to the Rangers. Hope it happens.

This can still lead to getting Nash, so no one sleep! We’re TRAIDIN THE PLAYAZ!!!!

when the rangers went to the podium to announce their pick i had my fingers crossed for either parise or brown

instead we got he who shall not be named lest i go out and buy a handgun and shoot someone in the face

be nice to pick him up for a song, and hopefully he’d mesh quickly with richards to add some solid depth up and down the roster

Watching the reaction some ranger fans are having over the prospect of trading Dubinsky

Made me think back to when I lost my innocence as a fan of a player, that idea that just because I liked a player meant that he wouldn’t be traded. and I lost that feeling in 04 when Brian Leetch was traded to the Leafs and I couldn’t believe that the organization would do that to my favorite player. But my dad explained that you can’t develop those kinds of ties to any player because they can always be traded.

So I ask you guys…when did you guys realize that any player, even your favorite player, could be traded at any time?

Hey guys

Let’s cool the jets on throwing the word “rape” around.

I’d appreciate it. Thanks.

apparently

howson somehow views dubinsky as a #1 center who would replace carter

if that’s the case pull the trigger on nash asap: dubi thomas valentenko & a pick may well do it

howson does not seem like the sharpest tool in the shed

Whatever it is that Howson is taking…I want some of that in spades

Dubinsky to replace Carter? Where the hell does he see that?

Joe, where did you hear this? If that’s really the case the deal is probably as good as done. If he covets dubinsky THAT much then McD, Step, and Krieder shouldn’t eve be in Howson’s mind.

The top photo here makes me wonder, between Prospal’s smile (despite being checked into the boards, with his leg in a very vulnerable position) and Dubinsky’s morose expression, what happened just prior to the “check.” Was there a comment from Vinny regarding becoming teammates again?

These shots make me miss Vinnie, Zuccs, and Duby.
