Breaking News: Wojtek Wolski Traded To Florida Panthers For Third Round Pick

Bob McKenzie of TSN just reported that New York Rangers forward, Wojtek Wolski, has been traded to the Florida Panthers. Wolski has only played two games since returning from the injury reserve earlier in the season. This has been looming for quite some time, but it has finally become a reality.

It is confirmed that the Rangers have received a third round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, along with defensemen Mike Vernace. In all honesty, this is another typical Sather deal, he somehow managed to squeak out a third round pick, for Wolski, who has been scratched for the entire season. The Florida Panthers initially had interest in Wolski because of his past success in shootouts.

The Rangers have also, officially freed up $3.8 million in cap space, and are still currently in the Rick Nash sweepstakes. This could shape up to be a very interesting weekend for the Rangers. We will keep you guys updated on any further deals.

Zuke, Marchessault, Wellman, and Newbury are all pretty damn good “insurance” options. We are getting something for a guy who wasn’t going to get dressed again. Besides, those are the guys I can name off the top of my head, there is plenty of depth for forwards… “NHL ready” forwards? Perhaps not. There is always Avery ;)

Fedotenko is out of the lineup and we still didn’t play Wolski. I think Slats and the organization has confidence in our depth.

Im not against the deal at all…just saying there still has to be a deal in the works to add bottom depth. None of those guys are what you want for the playoffs.

by Blueshirt in Paris on Feb 25, 2012 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

The list of NHL teams that have highly desirable players lined up in the farm systems is terribly, terribly short.

In the playoffs the weakest forwards are going to be getting 7 minutes of ice. If there is a significant injury, we have a few guys who can handle the big minutes and contribute offensively when they play with other talented forwards. I am not “poo pooing” your worries, just trying to reassure that you moving Christensen and Wolski shouldn’t be something we are now troubled about, it is, for the most part, addition by subtraction because we simply weren’t using those players.

EC and WW had to go, I am not against that at all. I agree.

Just that you need depth if you plan on making a run. And if we land Nash you can bet that we are going to try to make that run. You don’t give up what we will to land him and not try to address other holes.

Slats an no other GM for that matter, except maybe Milbury, would plan on trying for the cup with a 7th dman playing RW.

Not saying it was the best idea to put Bickel on the wing, I wouldn’t have done it.

I think we have good depth in the current lineup. A guy like Mitchell can move up to the second line in case of an injury, Fedotenko has played up there when he has had to… there are options there.

Blueshirt Banter

by Dig Deep on Feb 25, 2012 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

Zuc isnt on the roster and if he isnt trusted with regular season games why would he be in the playoffs.

And therein lies the issue. If Mitchell is going to be plugged in anywhere who takes his spot? And the lack of a contributing 3rd/4th line makes it so you have to overplay your top 2 lines and it is wearing down on those guys.

Aucune clause de Mouvement

by Blueshirt in Paris on Feb 25, 2012 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

Not true. 3rd line is still one of the most valuable set of guys we have. We play them against almost anyone.

Zuke isn’t on the roster because there is no room for him, but if we need to add a skill guy, he is the first source we tap.

I am not saying we don’t need or couldn’t benefit from adding a veteran guy to plug-in, but I don’t think we should be panicking about it and making it a huge priority. Guys like John Mitchells and Fedotenkos can be had as a last-minute thing on deadline day if we really think it is a necessity.

My point was 3rd isnt contributing offensively and 4th isn’t contributing offensively nor much defensively. Hence why you don’t give them much TOI and have to overplay your top 2.

i dont know why you think I am panicking just like I don’t know where you got I was against the EC/WW deal.

All i said was that it is a hole, and it is, and you would expect it to be addressed.

Didn’t mean to suggest that you were panicking.

Just trying to suggest it is not a huge priority.

Depth scoring is the key here, and I would rather go the route you seem inclined to pursue, adding depth scoring as opposed to landing the big fish (Nash).

Oh sure, if we can get a 2nd/3rd line scoring and bump others down then that addresses the issue as well. But not much out there from what I read.

But then its a question of who gets bumped.

Aucune clause de Mouvement

Dubinsky third line. Hagelin being bumped down wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing either.

We just need consistency… really a guy like Dubi should be scoring for us but because he isn’t we need to find goals from other sticks in the lineup. That is why I am pretty enthusiastic about John Mitchell. He fits in the 4th line and isn’t terrible with top six minutes. Granted, he isn’t my first pick to be playing with Richards or Gaborik, but he is better than a guy with rocks for hands.

So Nash is clearly going to be a Ranger now, just a matter of when/for who. I’m nervous the cap space freed up by this move means we’re trading lower salary players, i.e. a Del Zotto or McDonagh.

by callahanisgod on Feb 25, 2012 1:11 PM EST reply actions

On the flip side, if Dubisnky is still in the deal, puts us in a significantly better cap position this summer.

IDIOTIC

Does Sather know anything about markets? If this is even remotely true, he’s just settling for what CBJ is “calling” the market as. Nash is a good player and I would like to have him – but not with his contract.

by Rob L on Feb 25, 2012 1:16 PM EST up reply actions

So does this mean the Rangers can realistically get Nash without trading Dubi and still not be in awful cap position or no?

I would guess not

just eyeballing it they’d have 6 players (Hank, Nash, Dubi, Callahan, Gabby, and Richards) making at least 4 million (for over 34 million) for the next two years before Hank’s contract is up. At that point, Hank’s likely to make a bit more. Then of course you have contracts for Step, McD, Del Zotto. I mean, its feasible…but it just leaves them really tight against the cap, I’d think and little room to maneuver.

by NastyNate82 on Feb 25, 2012 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

They could but CBJ wants a very solid roster player. Also doesn’t help us for Capgate Summer 2013

No idea why some people here are freaking out and believe this trade leads to a Nash deal.

Wolski is a RFA this summer and the Rangers clearly had no intent to resign him. He wasn’t even playing anymore for the Rangers. Trading him and get something in return makes a lot of sense.

by M.R.M. on Feb 25, 2012 1:40 PM EST reply actions

Well said.

People forget that Sather has a history of being a good ‘people person’ to players who he knows won’t play a part in the long term NYR system. Over the years, he’s traded guys like Sanguinetti, Kennedy, and others, and now add Wolski – to give them a chance somewhere else. Whether they make it or not is a different matter -but he gives them a chance. And he gets at least something back in return.

Seems plausible since we’ve heard reliably that Kreider is not going anywhere, and you can bet that neither Step nor Hagelin are.
Pure trash speculation. To pay any attention to it is giving it more than it deserves (Guilty, I am)

so the first Nash shoe to drop has happened: freeing up cap space by trading WW. Mark Spector is saying that CBJ wants one of MDZ or MCD, Erixon and a #1. Brooks saying Erixon is definitely in play for Nash. Again, my package: Dubi, Thomas, Erixon, and a #1. Erixon is the guy that will put it over the top. said it before and I still believe it to be true.

getting WW off the cap means another move is coming after Nash, probably for a D. because the Rangers already have approx $7M in annual cap space.

by Richter1994 on Feb 25, 2012 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

The point of acquiring Nash is that you think this club is capable of winning the cup THIS YEAR.
You take away MDZ, slot Erixon in his place, and that’s simply not possible.

by dbmaven on Feb 25, 2012 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

not if another D is coming. WW’s cap space needed to come off.

by Richter1994 on Feb 25, 2012 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

but I’m ok giving Erixon for Nash.

by Richter1994 on Feb 25, 2012 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

Why?

What has he done to warrant trading him? I get the hype around Erixon but if he is a defender with a smaller window of offense why the hell would you trade your only offensive defenseman? It’s not like he’s 5 years older than Erixon, he’s less than a year older, sometimes these trade scenarios baffle the shit out of me.

by Kevin Papa on Feb 25, 2012 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

On top of that

call me batshit crazy but I actually think DZ plays a solid defense. As we WITNESSED last night, even McD has brainfarts, because he is young and only human. The kid could be a damn star on Broadway for a long time.

by Kevin Papa on Feb 25, 2012 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

everyone makes mistakes. last night is not the game to pick out for MDZ fans, lol.

by Richter1994 on Feb 25, 2012 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

Lol no I get that, I’m not picking on your statement or you in any way either, sorry if I’m coming off a bit mean..I just think MDZ could be the driving force for our D-in terms of another man in on the rush and playing some decent defense. I’m all for keeping this team how it is, adding a player that does not warrant trading Erixon (I’m being a huge bitch by not wanting to bite the bullet, but again, if it happens, there’s a reason and I’ll embrace anyone that makes there way on this team)

by Kevin Papa on Feb 25, 2012 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

no, you’re not mean at all, just giving your view which I respect. however, I will say that big MDZ fans continue to ignore the blemishes he has. which there are some. sometimes big ones. Like saying if he’s the one traded for Nash then we can’t win a Cup this year. Really? come on.

by Richter1994 on Feb 25, 2012 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

Thank you

and I would consider myself a big MDZ fan, but defense is not his strong suit. I will say he has improved vastly, and compared to other offensive dmen he is rather good at playing a two way game but he also makes a shitload of mistakes sometimes, probably confidence as we’ve witnessed on some nights when he is unstoppable and others he looks like they stuck Wade Reddin in a #4 jersey. Hell no, we still have a great chance to win the Cup, I just personally think he could be a big part of the D for this club especially because he will help bring offense from our otherwise stagnant blueline

by Kevin Papa on Feb 25, 2012 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

listen I love MDZ and he has improved greatly. I would like him here, just temper the praise a little is all. he still has some things to learn.

because I think Erixon will be a top pair D in the league and MDZ will not.

by Richter1994 on Feb 25, 2012 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

We have that with McD.

And with the King the way he is/will be for a couple of years, I’d rather see MDZ driving to the net and playing decently solid D for 10 years than trade him and have another “potential” top pair Dman who may never even make it to that level.

by Kevin Papa on Feb 25, 2012 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

ok, I’m not adverse to MDZ, I just think Erixon will be better. again, I have zero problem sending the package I propose to get Nash.

by Richter1994 on Feb 25, 2012 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

i want this guy (Nash).

by Richter1994 on Feb 25, 2012 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

lmao

if we can make it work, and our cap (somehow) has room to sign the major guys without “Capgate 2013” then I admit it would be fucking cool to see Rick Nash in a Rangers jersey ..damnit Richter1994 now I want to see it haha

by Kevin Papa on Feb 25, 2012 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

lol, seriously, I can’t understand that if the “untouchables” don’t go and the package I proposed is accepted how all Ranger fans aren’t doing cartwheels. we’ll worry about the cap 3 years from now at that time.

by Richter1994 on Feb 25, 2012 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

Admittedly

I apologize for giving shit to you and others who wanted him (although some went nuts about how BADLY he was needed, that was ridiculous) but now that I really THINK about what you said and others, if we are somewhat responsible, address the 2013 cap…when its 2013 lmao

by Kevin Papa on Feb 25, 2012 3:15 PM EST up reply actions

I NEVER wanted to give McD, Stepan, etc etc etc for Nash. The package I state above is what I want to give. There is nothing in my package that can’t be replaced. I hate giving up Erixon but you have to give to get. Worrying about the cap 3 years from now is not the right thinking. The cap is a year by year thing and I believe that it’s not going down after the new CBA. The Rangers will make it work and Gaby and the King come off in 2013/14 at their current contracts,

by Richter1994 on Feb 25, 2012 3:18 PM EST up reply actions

There has been a lot of talk in the last week about the cap going down.

by Dizzybizzy on Feb 25, 2012 4:33 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Nobody really knows, and other stuff could happen like adding a “franchise player” that doesn’t count vs. the cap.

by BigB22 on Feb 25, 2012 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

just my opinion but with Fehr is the player leader I can’t see him getting the players less than they have now. so I don’t buy all this talk of rollbacks, lower cap, etc. again, just me opinion.

by Richter1994 on Feb 25, 2012 5:21 PM EST up reply actions

There not speculating much of a cap decrease. Less than 1 million. I see the main argument from the owners as the cap being right back to the point it was pre lock out. They were complaining when the Ranger’s salary was at 66 million in 02, 77 million in 03 (not 100% on those numbers) I can’t see owners not complaining that its right back there in a much worse economy. I think the up up up trend has to stop at some point. Just my opinion. But you never know.

by Dizzybizzy on Feb 25, 2012 6:18 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

regardless of what some say, Nash is elite and would be the 2nd sniper we have been looking for on the LW. not to mention he’s huge and impossible to knock off the puck, similar to Jagr.

by Richter1994 on Feb 25, 2012 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

better Erixon than Kreider IMO, but losing McD/MDZ as well hurts our D for years to come… I like your package a little better

Incarcerated Bob's breaking reports accuracy rating

On accuracy of "reporting," Bob fared much better. He scored a 29% accuracy rating with how often his "reports" turned out ultimately to be correct. I don’t know what kind of education most of you have, but the schools I went to taught me that 29% accuracy, was a miserable failure. An "F" as my first grade teacher Ms. Johnston called it. I’m not sure your political bent, dear reader, but if it were provable that either FOX or MSNBC reported the news with 29% accuracy, both would be out of business, and the punchline of many a joke.

Nah

Just growing up it seemed like a shit job. In high school my best friend was a goalie and it just seems like he never got any credit he deserved.

We never would have won anything without him though, but at the time when he would make a good save it almost came unnoticed because we expected that outta him.

Similar to when I see Henrik make an amazing save. It’s like i’ve seen it a hundred times and i’m not surprised.

agreed

goalies carry a huge burden. i guess we are just cut from a different cloth. i like that i can single handedly change the outcome of a game. its not about the glory anymore. i can be selfish back there and just worry about me. i only have to worry when the puck is in my zone. there are less plays to read. its almost like being in a wild west shoot battle, its so short and intense that when the play is over, that adrenaline just lingers

I tried it once about 6 or 7 years ago in a pick up game. I told my friend " as long as the 1st shot doesn’t go in I’ll be good." The 1st shot went in, then the 4th , 6th and half a dozen more. I always thought goalies were guys that couldn’t skate. Pads and all I had black and blues everywhere for 2 weeks. And a new found respect for the guys that willingly do this all the time.

Sometimes the position chooses you

I played sweeper in soccer. If you’re doing your job, no one even notices you’re there. Credit for shutouts always goes to the goalie, and you never get any scoring chances.

But I guess that’s why they’re called team sports. Do what you gotta do.

Would you rather Rick Nash not play up to his contract and put up 30-30-60 or have Dubinsky not play up to his contract and put up 15-20-35? The difference is about $3.6 million dollars.

@clalicata17

by Clalicata17 on Feb 25, 2012 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think it's about Dubi anymore

We all seem to want Rick Nash.

It is just what else are we giving up with Dubi.

They want MDZ/MacTruck + Top Prospect (D) + 1st

we want to give them 2 Top Prospects not named Kreider, Erixon, Miller and a 1st.

by rain-g-errs on Feb 25, 2012 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

Doesn't really have to do with that

This pertains to playing in a salary capped world where production vs. cost is the key.

That’s why Dustin Brown has the best contract in the NHL.

Basically the question is: Is 25 points worth the extra $3.6 million?

HENRIK LUNDQVIST OILS LIKE HE'S GETTING A HIMMER. DO YOU?

I think the majority of us

would rather have this whole fiasco over than worry about the terrible cap hit we are about to take with nash.

IMO: those 25 points are worth it if they are clutch 25 points and consist of a few game winners.

by rain-g-errs on Feb 25, 2012 3:56 PM EST up reply actions

exactly. if there in a 8-0 game who cares remember gabby last year?

if they’re to win an playoff game then sure he’d be worth it.

From capgeek:

@capgeek

With Wolski salary dump, the #NHL #NYRangers could add close to $11m in cap hits at the deadline http://www.capgeek.com/trade_deadline_tracker.php

To me, a Nash deal may include one or two other players offered to the Rangers in return. This makes me wonder if something bad will be included to offset Sather’s desire to keep Step, MDZ and McD.

People are talking Tyutin

Don’t want him back and his bad cap hit. I hope them getting Jack Johnson can make Slats talk them out of our blue line.

Still think this deal goes down as Dubi, Mcilrath, Thomas orSt. Croix a 1st rounder this year and maybe a couple other late round this year and next.

Sather will not lose a trade. If he feels he’s not winning it he won’t do it.

night and day when you look for peoples opinions.

However #s do not agree with people’s opinions.
something i posted earlier.

Averages below are extended averages, assuming the production rate of the season extended to 82 games played, ie if you scored 32 goals in 41 games, in 82 games you would expect to score 64 goals.

Stats below reflect up to and including the 2010-2011 Season. [Excluding Playoffs]
==
Rick Nash
Career NHL Average [Goals]: 36
Career NHL Average [Asissts]: 31
Combined: 67 Points

Jeff Carter
Career NHL Average [Goals]: 31
Career NHL Average [Asissts]: 29
Combined: 60 Points

I agree Nash is a better player, but the numbers show the relative improvement. Nash is a better player by 7 points on the season on average with their play in the NHL.

This is why Howson is a [expletive] dolt and CBJ org is absurdly inept
Averages below are extended averages, assuming the production rate of the season extended to 82 games played, ie if you scored 32 goals in 41 games, in 82 games you would expect to score 64 goals.

Stats below reflect up to and including the 2010-2011 Season. [Excluding Playoffs]
==
Rick Nash
Career NHL Average [Goals]: 36
Career NHL Average [Asissts]: 31
Combined: 67 Points

Jeff Carter
Career NHL Average [Goals]: 31
Career NHL Average [Asissts]: 29
Combined: 60 Points

Carter gets traded for a Top 4 D and a conditional 1st rounder

Yet Howson wants Two Top 6 Roster Players, 1D, 1F, a Top Prospect, and a 1st round pick for Nash.

by rain-g-errs on Feb 25, 2012 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

Keep Erixon or McIlrath and include Del Zotto. Del Zotto will never be a top DMan. His offense comes at a price. His =/- is more a credit to Lundquist than his own play. What is his +/- with Biron in goal? I believe the games against Pens with Bylsma putting Malkin against him showed just how bad defensively Del Zotto is.

by Blue Skys on Feb 25, 2012 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

Then why isn’t Girardi’s or Mcdonagh’s +/- higher than his. If your standard for a defenseman is shutting down Malkin you need to lower your standards. Did you see what he did today?

by jhipko13 on Feb 25, 2012 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

Girardi and McD are top pair Dmen. Top pair DMen DO NOT EVER lead in +/-

No, he was a scoring D-man who was seemingly paired with very good shutdown D-men.

There are 47 thousand things that need to be used for context with +/-. For starters, the competition level of Girardi/McDonagh is light years more difficult than what MDZ is asked to defend.

My point is that there are no 21 year old d-men who can shutdown malkin so his standards are way too high.

Del Zotto is not a good defender period. He gets trapped too often, outmuscled regularly and flops on the ice way too much. Malkin or not. He is a 21 year old version of Mike Green and doesn’t fit our system

If one is going to be deemed ‘untouchable,’ he should at least be close to that level. He’s a bit below even the next tier, guys like Hedman, Edler, or Bogosian, who were younger than this year’s MDZs.

I don't see a deal for Nash happening before the deadline

Seems like Howson is still being very greedy and is unwilling to lower his demands. Sather is sticking to the “untouchable” list that we all know about already. Unless Howson all of a sudden decides he’ll accept Sather’s offer, this deal won’t be happening.
