Rangers Vs. Devils: Rangers Slip Ahead Of Devils In Hard Fought Game
The New York Rangers came away with their second straight victory, with a 2-0 shutout over the New Jersey Devils. The score pretty tells how this game played out tonight. Between both teams, there was only a combined total of 28 shots, talk about a defensive game.
The fans started getting on Marty Brodeur very early as he misplayed a few pucks, that almost led to a couple Ranger goals. However, about halfway through the first period, Carl Hagelin was whistled down inference, which was a well deserved penalty. Had Hagelin not taken that penalty it would have allowed one of the Devils' to break in on Lundqvist.
After coming out of the box, Hagelin was very active and was using his speed a lot. It finally paid off as Hagelin banged home a rebound near the side of the net to make it 1-0. Ryan Callahan did some great work behind the net, which led to the puck eventually coming out in front of the net.
Follow after the jump for more.
Following the Hagelin goal, Eric Boulton got into a shoving match with Marian Gaborik on the face-off. John Tortorella and Mike Rupp didn't stand for that whatsoever. Mike Rupp wound up jumping over the boards to switch with Gaborik, but the officials wouldn't allow the late change.
So as soon as the puck dropped, Rupp was right back out there looking for Boulton. Unfortunately, as soon as Rupp took to the ice, Boulton headed straight for the Devils bench. How's that for being a tough guy?
The first period was only a prerequisite to what was coming in the second period. Just four minutes into the second, David Clarkson and Brandon Dubinsky were sharing some words in the corner, that escalated pretty quickly. It then ended up with Clarkson mouthing off to the referee, which earned him a 10-minute misconduct.
Finally, with just under five minutes remaining in the second period, Eric Boulton finally dropped the gloves, but not with Mike Rupp. His opponent would be Brandon Prust, who gave Boulton a run for his money, and both players landed some good punches. Prust appeared hurt after being separated from Boulton, but the Rangers stated that he is fine in the post-game.
After having words earlier in the period with Brandon Dubinsky, Mike Rupp was lined up next to Clarkson on the ensuing face-off. Mike Rupp was definitely getting under the skin of Clarkson, who slashed Rupp twice in the stick, and both would sit for two minutes.
If you thought Clarkson was done there, you're kidding yourself. After coming of out the box, he took an absolute run at Brandon Dubinsky, and even left his feet in the process. Dubinsky said enough was enough and dropped the gloves. Dubinsky certainly electrified the crowd with that fight, and also stopped Clarkson from running around. But, as the players were being escorted off of the ice, Clarkson began to have words with Henrik Lundqvist as well. When will this guy ever stop?
The third period didn't contain much action, other then the absolute robbery by Henrik Lundqvist on Ilya Kovalchuk. Ryan Callahan sealed the deal with an empty netter to put the Rangers up 2-0. It's worth noting that Ryan McDonagh played a solid, solid game tonight. He and Girardi shutdown Kovalchuk basically the entire night. Henrik Lundqvist came away with his league leading shutout, as well as his 30th win of the season. Lundqvist has now put up 30-plus wins in all seven seasons he has been with the Rangers.
The Rangers will be back in action on Thursday night to take on the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh.

when, Pierre McGuire says “WOW” about a play you made on Ilya Kovalchuk it must do wonders for your confidence. As much as I can’t stand Pierre, he was praising McDonagh the entire night and rightfully so, he had a monster of a game…

That particular play where he completely bodied a rushing Kovalchuck and shut him down was the highlight of the game in my opinion

I laugh every time I see oiled himmers – but I don’t know what it means.
I know it was from a game thread and assume a mistype or a mistaken spell check from a mobile device. Can someone provide the background?

this was exactly the kind of game we needed.....
this game did a lot of things for me.
As a proponent of the Nash trade, this game went a long way toward solidifying my faith in the current roster. Dubinsky, who can be undisciplined, did everything right and I applaud his courage in fighting Clarkson.
One thing I have to say I liked: the respect shown toward the Rangers by Doc Emrick and Pierre Maguire. It’s nice to see other broadcasters give us praise, long overdue praise. Maguire was absolutely glowing over McDonagh, and its about time these guys recognize.
When Boulton was shoving Gaborik around, and Torts tried to throw Rupp out there, you have to see the value in having a guy like Rupp around. Of course, the refs disallowed the change but still, the message was sent. I laughed my ass off when Rupp added to David Clarkson’s game-wide meltdown. When Sykora chopped at Lundqvist’s hands after that whistle, Del Zotto and Rupp came flying in to set shit right.
This team is so tight knit its beautiful. No, the PP is not where it needs to be, but a game like tonight certainly tells you a lot about the character of this New York Ranger team.
It’s gonna be one hell of a spring in New York.

A guy like Rupp has some value (the toughness), I just wish there was more of a two-way game there.

Completely agree
You watch this current Rangers squad play and the first thing you see is “team”
That’s how they play, and that’s how they win. I believe in these guys, I really do.
Oh and having the King playing on the top of his game helps. Henrik never ceases to amaze me. 7 seasons, 7 seasons of 30 wins. Remarkable. He better be getting his Vezina.

Yea, I was a proponent of the Nash trade but it sounds to me like Sather did the absolute right thing by sticking tight. Not only did we win tonight, but I saw a Ranger team that I haven’t seen in a bunch of games. If we can stay focused like this and stick to our system, we can beat anyone in the league.
Even though I think we need another threat up front I still feel very good about heading into Spring with this lineup.
Nice game tonight.
I'm sorry
But what did Rupp do of value when Tortorella sent him onto the ice after Boulton had already shoved Gaborik? Or how did he prevent Sykora from chopping? Those players still did what they wanted to, when they wanted to. Not only that, but they got Tortorella to put Rupp on the ice. And more Rupp on the ice means more pressure on Lundqvist and the defense.
I didnt see Boulton go near Gabby after that. It simply sends a message- you fuck with our stars and you will catch a beating.

but he'd already gone after gabby
and sykora still went after lundqvist. no one was deterred at all.
the message sent is: you fuck with our stars and we’ll send goons onto the ice. and take our stars off the ice. win-win for opponents
I dont agree but do see your logic. However what is your response? Do you let Boulton start pummeling Gabby?

Someone on the ice interrupts
or Gaborik skates away. There is no “letting” here since Scott would also “let” Boulton pummel Gaborik [from the bench he’d be powerless to stop it]. Unless you’re going to put Scott on the first line with Gaborik and somehow force Boulton to fight him when Scott instigates, then Scott isn’t going to be preventing any “liberties”
I have watched the Rangers for ever- 40 + years. I have seen when they were Herb Brooks Smurfs just get the iving crap kicked out of them because no one on the team could take on a Philly or Boston heavyweight. Ditto Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nilson. No one backed them up and Nilson was pretty much driven out of the game by overly physical ( ie Goons).
It may not be right from a Hockey purist’s persepctive but it is a nescessary part of today’s game. Correct- nothing can be done for a specific shift but potential retaliation- whether against Bolton or better yet- Parise- helps sette it down.

I think you are missing the point of having tough guys. It is so that they can occupy each other instead of more skilled players. Gaborik did not have to worry from then on about Boulton taking a run at him. The Philly game was another good example – Bickel dealt with their AHL clowns instead of a more important player. Sykora (and the rest of the team) saw that when you make contact with the goalie, we will make contact with you. And the stuff with Clarkson was the best…one of their best scorers this year was so occupied with Dubinsky and worried about Rupp, he did not even have one offensive chance. Stuff is going to happen but its the response that is key. Most times, the teams will not even attempt anything. Look at the timid game the Bruins play against the Rangers even though the bully their way to wins against the rest of the league.
True…two different approaches. It seems like yours is the “turn the other cheek and play through it” and mine is “bash the other person’s cheek and play through it.” But you are right, there have been teams in the past that have been completely “soft-serve” and have won Cups. That Tampa team was pretty weak…
Maybe it was the warm weather today, but that game felt close to playoff intensity. I loved it. 9 points up on Boston.

I just meant it’s riddled with grammatical mistakes. I watch 99% of the games so I don’t NEED to read the recaps, I only pose this as constructive criticism, and I think the Banter can be better.

Proud to say I attended the game tonight
And boy was it a show. They stifled the Devils every time they came into the zone or tried to go up ice and make a play. THIS is what we’ve been searching for, THIS is the hockey I’ve been proud to call mine..Hagelin looks like he’s been doing this for 10 years, Gaborik was creating his own plays out there and I tell you, we should be favorites to win because we just have the complete team on the nights they perform.
Its a game like that which shows that the Rangers are ready for the playoffs. A very hard-fought game and the Rangers showed why they are the best in the league, in the standings and with the rough stuff. I loved how the Rangers played an “Avery-esque” game, getting in the faces of Kelly Clarkson, Kovalchuk, and Parise, to the point where you barely even know Parise was playing. It was obvious, especially for Clarkson, that he had lost focus.
On a side note, I lost a lot of respect for Clarkson and Boulton for refusing to drop the gloves with guys in their “divisions.” Boulton is a heavy-weight and should be dealing with Rupp and Clarkson is more in the league of Prust. Rangers still did a great job at dealing with the nonsense. That Zubrus elbow was nasty and pretty much summed up the Devils’ game. He should have a discussion next game with The People’s Champ, John Scott. As much as most people hate it, I got to give Sather credit for providing the Rangers with some of the best fighters in the league. Rangers are #1 in the East (almost NHL but Vancouver has one more point with two more games played) and #1 in team fighting majors – That works for me!

“Also, it’s predict the narrative time: The Rangers are ruining hockey with their boring defensive style where they grab a lead and just suck the life out of a game such a gritty, defensively sound hockey club that’s great to watch. They are just so responsible in their own zone and it’s absolutely splendiferous to see the Broadway Blueshirts back in contention.

As well as the Rangers have played defensively over this year, last night has to be a top 3 if not best overall game on D. They were all over the ice and basically stifled the Devs at every turn. I mean the shots were 12-10 Rangers after 2 periods which is also a credit to the Devs as well. That was tough, exciting, playoff hockey we witnessed. I was at the game and the crowd was buzzing all night. Clarkson was a lunatic and should be hearing from Shanny, right BigB? lol.
Clarkson is gutless. He won’t fight Rupp or Prust but doesn’t mind mixing it up with Dubi. Same with Boulton. You wonder why Sather got Scott? Prust needs to cut back on his fights.
"You Wonder why Sather got Scott?"
So those guys can play smart hockey, draw penalties on him and refuse to fight him?

Anyone but me think it’s time Torts should mix up the lines a bit?
Hagelin-Richards-Callahan
Dubi-Stepan-Gaborik
AA-Mitchell-Zuccarello
4th line-
Feds-Boyle/Rupp-Prust(These guys can’t score right now… my reasoning for this. Also, we aren’t helping Dubinsky’s game any more by lining him with Boyle and Prust. Good checking unit but if I see a pass on the tape to another player I gasp in excitement, which is how often it happens.
I love Prust and Boyle but their passing skills are atrocious. Poor Dubi, not going to get back in top six playing with those two.

Dubisnky has always had stone hands. Better passes arent nescessarily going to help. He needs to continue to play more physically and drive to the net. He scores in front on rebounds. A beautiful pass is wasted on him.
