Ryan Smyth rumors

Yeah it is that time of the year when rumors are abundant. Latest out of the NY Post has Brooks claiming that Ryan Smyth would waive his NTC to come to the Rangers.

He doesn't say if the NYR have the same interest but given Slats history with Smyth and that he would fill the tough scoring LW you could assume there would be some interest depending on price.

Smyth is on his last year of his contract and his cap hit would be around $1.4mil at the time of the trade deadline, enough to fit with the Rangers if we traded/demoted WW.

On pace for another 20g season, 4th year in a row, it appears he is still productive. His 4ppg would place him 3rd on the NYR.

Thoughts?

perfect for the Rangers. pure rental and we can sign Parise in the offseason.

I love how us getting a Rental Ryan Smyth isn’t the big deal to you, the fact that it doesn’t bone the crazy pipedream to sign Parise is the big deal.

What are we going to pay Parise?

Parise is very doable. For argument sake lets say he gets $6.5m. Minus Dubi $4.2m minus $2mil of Drury buoy cap hit basically covers it.

You still have WW $3.8, Avery , Fed $1.4, Avery $2 another spare D coming off the books as well

All needing to get paid.

Next year:
Del Zotto leaving his EL contract.

Two years from now:
McDonagh, Stepan, Hagelin leaving their EL contract.

We have plenty of guys coming off the books too, don’t get me wrong I understand that. And we could probably find a way to fit Parise if we let a few guys go. But what is that going to do to the depth of the team and will it be worth it? In many ways I feel like we went after our huge free agent with Richards, it isn’t something we can just repeat this upcoming summer. Should we rule it out? No. But I think we should try and be realistic about guys who are going to have to get paid that we want to keep.

But all being RFA. If you look what happened with Dubi, Cally, AA, etc.. on their first year RFA they got about $1.2 bump.

I have played with the numbers and it can still be done. Sure you have to look ahead but you can always adjust things as well.

Assuming you’re looking at capgeek, you’re confused. We have about $1.1m in space right now, which means we could add a $3.4m player (because he costs us a 1/3 of that). That’s how capgeek currently has it listed.

With the same space, at the deadline, we can add a $5.4m player on deadline day. Still need to shed room, and yes, I understand Wolski is enough to take care of that.

Probably comes on the cheap, he’s looking to win a cup, and he’s the type of personality that would fit in well with this team.

Out of any of the available options, he might be the best fit.

Smyth fits well. He would be good on the PP, he grinds on the boards, and he scores dirty goals. We need offense and heaven knows we need to do something with our pitiful PP.

Let's Do It

Wonder what it will take to get him though? Is Dubinsky enough? Or do the Oilers want more?

by Guess Who's Back? on Feb 3, 2012 1:06 PM EST reply actions

Dubinsky? He’s a UFA. Give them a 3rd-rounder and a dinky prospect at best.

by Caerid11 on Feb 3, 2012 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

Same as in 2007

But didn’t the Islanders give a little more to get him?

by Guess Who's Back? on Feb 3, 2012 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

Smyth won’t cost much since he has a NTC so he can dictate where he goes and if he goes AND it’s the worst kept secret that he will re-sign with the Oilers after this year because he wants to retire an Oiler. so he is a pure rental. like Caerid said, throw them a 3rd rounder and let’s move on. don’t forget the relief of his cap hit for the rest of the year is a + for the cash restrictive Oilers as well. addition by subtraction.

by Richter1994 on Feb 3, 2012 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

Only 2 reasons to trade Dubinsky, either now or during the off-season.

1. Part of a package for a pure goal-scoring winger that’s either under contract or is willing sign an extension/new contract etc.

2. As cap relief if we get a significant contract coming back or to chase a high-priced FA (Parise).

Not fur UFA rentals.

alls I’m saying is that a 3rd round pick is much more valuable to the oilers than a stiff like WW. WW was offered all around the league and there were no takers. Rangers would have probably had to add to any WW deal as incentive for the team to take him off their hands. what a waste (“WW”) of talent.

by Richter1994 on Feb 3, 2012 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

When was he offered to the entire league?

And a guy that has shown for the majority of his career that he can hold down an NHL job is almost always more valuable than a 3rd round draft pick, particularly one that will most likely come in the later part of the 3rd round.

by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Feb 3, 2012 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

I would think he has a bit more value then no value.

He has shown he can play and score in this league. He really has only played 46 games for us and before that 54 for PHO. Our system was never a good match for him.

I can see a team thinking if they gave him some quality time and let him settle in he might produce once again. You give him the rest of the season to try out. If it works out you sign him with a pay cut.

i havent seen you post anything on here saying that you have a source that is saying the rangers will get player x or y. i dont think anybody will take your word for gospel until you call a few things before they happen. in this age of fake insiders like eklund and incarceratedbob and other people on twitter/blogs claiming to have sources and being wrong 100% of the time you cant believe everybody that claims to have a source. maybe you do have a friend that knows sather, but until you prove it by breaking a couple moves, then everybody is gonna take you with a grain of salt

I guess I didn’t realize that people would make shit like this up to get kudos on banter. I’m not a newspaper reporter trying to sell in a dying industry or a website owner garnering for clicks. I shared the info because I trust the person that said it and he does have a relationship with Sather. I don’t really give a shit what anyone believes or doesn’t believe, just don’t expect to be called a liar. Wtf would I have to gain by fabricating something like this? I came on this thread to see what people thought about the trade, not to defend the viability of it happening. Do we want an older rental player? I’m against mortgaging the future for a cup run this season but not convinced Ryan Smyth is going to be the difference maker I would hope for. Hopefully the deal doesn’t go through, I can be wrong and the Rangers add the perfect LW to the mix. I don’t really care as long axe the Rsngers win.

^^He’s got a point.

Sorry you weren’t happy in how you were treated. I think people are just tired of trade scenarios in general, so maybe the anger was directed towards that and not towards you? At least hopefully.

"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

i dont think any of the people that commented meant to offend him personally but i cant speak for them. i for one am tired of everybody claiming they have sources when they dont. maybe isaiah does have a legit source, but its impossible to trust anybody if you havent seen this person be right before. if isaiah or anybody else nails a few trades or signings or what have you then everybody here will applaud him

Well I’m not saying to treat it like a legit source.

I’m saying that we could just talk about the scenario, why it makes sense and why it doesn’t, and how it’ll effect the team.

And also understand, if you look through the comments in different threads, you are like the 4th or 5th person that supposedly has a “reliable source” so we are a bit numb to it.

What everyone else said^^^

Plus, name calling? Show me exactly where someone called you something this thread? That’s right, you can’t. I called bullshit on you. That’s it, honestly if all that gets your panties in a bunch then clearly you aren’t mentally tough enough to comment on an online Ranger blog. Sheesh.

"I'm not a screamer or yeller. If I would try to scream and yell at people, it's not what I'd naturally do. So if I tried to do that, it would be awkward, I think." - Eli Manning
