New York Rangers Trade Erik Christensen, 7th Round Pick To Minnesota Wild For Casey Wellman
So long Mr. Invisible, we hardly knew ye. Erik Christensen has been traded to the Minnesota Wild for AHL forward Casey Wellman. Wellman will report to the Connecticut Whale, while it is unknown whether or not Christensen will join the NHL Wild yet.
Christensen, known for his shootout talents, last played for the Rangers on December 17th, and recently was demoted to the AHL for a "conditioning stint." While he earned the nickname "Mr. Invisible" for his amazing ability to be unnoticeable on the ice when he did play, he handled the situation when he did not play extremely well.
Wellman, 24, is a center, that has played 41 games in the NHL in his career, scoring four goals and assisting on nine more. You can see his NHL.com profile here. Hockey Wilderness, the Wild SB Nation Blog, wrote about Wellman here
This season in the AHL, Wellman has scored fourteen goals and assisted on twelve goals, in addition to 21 penalty minutes.
The 7th round pick is conditional, and this is likely a salary cap relief move for the Rangers.

Erik Christensen
may have been Mr. Invisible
but he was still a Ranger, now that we are finally Cup Contenders I feel bad for the kid, but he definitely deserved it with how he played on the ice.
i dont feel bad. he wasnt a heart and soul guy that was leaving it all out in the ice but just couldnt put up the numbers. EC just didnt look like he cared
by nyrangerfan521 on Feb 3, 2012 11:29 AM EST up reply actions
I think he cared, he just couldn’t play our game and lost his offensive talent and confidence.
I guess it is a good thing for both parties, Christensen and the Rangers that he is gone.
Wish they deal wolski asap though
i still think a wolski for penner deal could make sense for both teams

Good riddance
Clear his waste of cap space in preparation for another move, hopefully involving Wolski. Maybe give the Whale some help down there. Man, they’ve been stinky lately.
Breaking News:
Minnesota has fined and suspended newly acquired Erik Christensen for failing to appear at practice.
When asked why he failed to appear Erik stated “What? I was on the ice the whole practice”
Minnesota apparently contacted the Rangers seeking information on Christensen, they reportedly replied “yea he does that, he’ll we told him to dress for games and it was like he’d disappear for 60 minutes, your problem now.”

Let the games begin!
Christensen will miss the first two weeks with the Wild, due to a prior engagement. Apparently, Erik will be in Hollywood consulting on a new adaptation of the movie “memoirs of an invisible man 2”.

No tears shed, but he did have a strange way of coming out of nowhere every now and again with key goals that only seemed to make matters worse…I mean, we all know he’s able to make an impact. He just never seemed to light a fire under his arse…hope this is prep for an offensive threat in exchange for Wolski and a Harford cat.

I hope he does. I really hope he does. Maybe Minn will be the place where he can mentally put it all together; goodness knows he has the talent to excel.
I listened to his interview on the Wild website, and it made me feel really sad for the guy. On the plus side, at least he will be starting on their 3rd line instead of being treated like a spare part.

uhhh Cap Geek hit #'s
Casey Wellman- $850,500 AHL
$1,350,000 NHL
Christensen – $925,000 AHL
$750,000 NHL
I know $$$ doesnt really matter in the AHL with the rangers, but this isn’t a cap space move.
I believe Christensen had a 1 way contract however… which makes him have to pass waivers which Wellman would not have to do… and no reason to risk having to pay half of Christensens cap hit… for no reason…
@clalicata17
1way/2way deals have nothing to do with waivers.

My thoughts on Wellman
In case you all were wondering, doesn’t sound like you much care, and just wanted Christiansen gone, but here goes anyway.
Wellman has some sick speed, and a great wrist shot. He was also the most coveted free agent college player in his class. All of that has added up to… not much. He is a stud in the AHL, playing top line minutes and scoring almost at will. Then he comes up to the NHL and struggles.
My personal belief is he is being used completely wrong. Coaches here consistently use him as a bottom 6 guy, and that is not his game at all. Given some time to get a foot hold as a top 6 guy, you may have gotten a steal here. That said, don’t get your hopes up too high. He has yet to prove that my feelings are correct. Heworks his butt off, but seems to missing whatever the X factor is to be an NHLer.
Be good to him. If nothing else, his mom is hot.

Absolute Worst Ranger Fan!!!!!!....yet incredibly realistic and usually correct.
I agree
The sad part is that EC is not even worth an AHL player. Sather had to throw in a draft pick to get rid of the guy.
its a conditional pick, probably only if the rangers call wellmen up to the nhl within a certain time period.

Still, for a 28 year old guy with 358 NHL games played and a cap hit below a million, you need to throw in something extra to trade him for an AHL player. I think that’s sad but obviously that’s what EC is worth.
a fringe player with an inexpensive one way contract for a younger fringe player even more inexpensive and a two way contract….yeah its pretty fair to send a conditional end of draft pick….its a conditional seventh round that evens out the wilds lost of flexibilty. your taking it as a insult to EC but it really is just insurance if wellman comes to the nhl and does well, and its pretty cheap insurance too

Imagine if we get Carter from Columbus
next year our lines could possibly look like this: would be a dream if Carter clicked with Richie
Kreider Stepan Gaborik
Carter Richie Cally
Hags Arty Dubi
Prust Boyle Mitchell
or maybe
Kreider Stepan Gaborik
Carter Richie Hags
Dubi Arty Cally
Prust Boyle Mitchell
My one concern with Carter is his oft injured status, it’s not a recurring problem like gaborik and his groin (or groins for Joe michelleti), but it’s always something… No doubt he has the skill to be a recurring 30 goal scorer at minimum…. The other thing with Carter is how long his contract is with his constant injury woes…
personally I think Kreider becomes what Carter is, hopefully minus the injuries and lengthy contract…
I think the best bet would be to stand pat and grab Parise off FA if his demands are feasible… also the longer we wait on Carter the further is Value goes down as it is clear he does not want to be in Columbus, and his NMC kicking in this summer is a big burden on Columbus, so the closer to the deadline of that NMC the less his value will be…
@clalicata17
If is a big word. Gabby and BR were supposed to click, and they didn’t.
We can’t just assume good players will click. Carter and Nash didn’t either.
I don’t want to touch that contract. And it’s too early to be placing Kreider on that top line IMO.
"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
hmm
Yeah we would have to “feel” Kreider out
But Nash and Carter didn’t work out because Nash and Carter are both statistically 300+ shot per year guys. Richards is a 200+ shot per year guy and more of a playmaker. But yeah you could say the same thing with Gabby.
Honestly how long did we keep Richie with Gabby it didn’t feel that long. maybe we just need to give them more time with each other.
The last point you make is true. That’s the downside of Torts.
If he kept Dubi/Cally/AA together, that line might have been producing right now. I wish he would give guys more time to develop chemistry, but with where we are in the standings its hard to complain.
Regardless, having speed with guys like Kreider, Hagelin, Gabby, Cally, Prust, etc is hard to defend against.

Yeah ideally we would have on each of the first three lines, 1 speedy guy who can shoot, 1 playmaker, 1 grinder/stand in front of the net sort of guy
and then 1 line of pure forecheckers/grinders
legend
S:speedy shooter
G: Forecheck/grinder
P: Playmaker
(G)Kreider (P)Stepan (S)Gabby
(S)Carter (P)Richie (G) Cally
(S) Hags (P) Arty (G) Dubi
and a checking line of
Prust Boyle Mitchell
yeah some guys are playing out of position but we could figure something out, im tired and still at work lol
Yeah. I’d just like to stay away form Carter with that contract. If we are going to bring in a big contract, might as well make it worth it (Parise).

For what he can produce, that’s about as good of a contract as you can get. Hell, there are a good deal of mediocre players who don’t have nearly the offensive talent of Carter making 4+ a season.
True, but he’s signed for 10 more years. I rather not deal with that.
He’s not the worst guy to bring in. Again, it all matters what we would have to give up.

I won’t re-hash the whole thing I wrote, but the original deal was Voracek, a 1st (now Couturier), and a 3rd.
Whoever goes after Carter is negotiating from a position of strength.
The original trade alone is like us trading AA, our 1st and our 2nd for him (though a #8 vs. a #28-30 pick holds more value than a late 1 and a late 2).
You figure they’d want an NHL-ready guy in return, and at least a pick and another prospect. AA, 1st, ? Gives them a Russian C to play with Yakupov. I love AA as much as anybody (even with his current lack of…doing anything), but his play is ultimately replaceable at this point.
Also, a contract like Carter’s means there’s more chance of keeping/adding depth throughout the line-up than giving Parise 8m a year (Parise is an example folks, don’t get your curlies all twisted.
Some good points there.
I wont pretend I wouldn’t give up AA for Carter. If it only involves a 1st and maybe a lower level prospect, I’d do it..
but eventually those prospects become to much, and who knows how much Minny wants..

He’s definitely a very good passer, but I personally rather see him put into a spot where he’s relied upon to score.
I think like with most Russian players, if he feels that he’s needed he’ll dominate.

Carter?!?!
Um, absolutely fucking not.
He’s been complaining since he’s been in Columbus, Philly traded him because he was a “party animal” or possibly a locker room cancer. He doesn’t play good defense at all, he seems to be pretty lazy, I doubt he works with our grinding and physical style, this guy is locked up for 11 years!
Hell no to Jeff Carter, NO.

One more take on Casey Wellman from hockey prospectus:
I’ve gotten split reports on him. Some scouts still think he has a shot to be an NHL’er, some think he can score in the NHL and others think career AHL’er. The Rangers aren’t an easy team to break through on, but I could see him stepping in at some point in a bottom line role or if the Rangers really like his skill he could slide into a trigger role on the power play. The former seems much more likely in my opinion.

From a Wild blog, previously, and linked through http://www.snyrangersblog.com/2012/02/03/read-the-curious-case-of-casey-wellman/
That said, Wellman’s game is top six or nothing. He isn’t a grinder nor a checker. He is skilled labor being used to bag groceries. A job? Sure, but not the right job. He skates on the top line wing in Houston, developing into a top six forward with big minutes and power play time. When he is called up, he should be serving a similar purpose, or he should be left in Houston to play the minutes and situations he needs to play.
Almost sounds like Zuccarello, no?

He was a waiver pick-up.
I already posted this on the initial trade story, but it’s been buried…
It’s sad how everyone was so hard on him around here. He was a friggin’ waiver pick-up! Not some high-priced star. The kid single-handedly gave the team points with his shootout winners the last couple years. Plus, he never performed as or claimed to be a top-end talent, so why anyone expected more than 4th line minutes and procution from him is baffling. He showed up now and then with a pretty goal, which is what most low-liners do. Just cause he was put on a line with Gaborik for a short time doesn’t mean he should have been expected to perform like a superstar. He never had that talent-level. Hope he gets some playing time in Minn.

He had shootout winners, sure, but if his roster spot was filled by someone who wasn’t invisible 6 out of 7 games, we might have been in less shootouts. Oh hey, like this year.
Yea… he’s not that great. That’s the point. But everyone kills him like he’s a 7 million dollar player who under-performed. The kid had no expectations and no hype, he was a waiver pick up. Considering the team got him for nothing off the wire, he had nothing to live up to.

Granted he was a waiver pick up
But on a team starved for offense and you have a guy who is known for his offensive talent who doesn’t show up for games…you’re going to be taken to task for that. We never got on him for his lack of skills we got on him for his lack of showing up in games consistently and deservedly so.
So good riddance to bad garbage

Way too much money for that dude.
What do your “sources” say?

source says a deal this weekend is not out of the question, and could be done during the Super Bowl (Go Giants!).

Is it a swap of roster players, or an addition.

I’ll give you just this hint: It sounds like a three or four-for-one, and possibly for one of the bigger names in the league. And no Smyth, Doan, or Carter.
"Fart like a man! It's hockey!"
"A lack of faith shown can go a long, long way to failure."
Don’t like the sound of that.
Those usually end up being Dubinsky, Anisimov, Erixon, and a 1st round pick for a guy who is marginally better than Dubi or AA.
Well, let’s see.

I don’t think it’ll be 2 roster guys, UNLESS there’s something else in the works to add another player (I don’t think anybody’s coming up from the AHL to fill a spot at this point).
Sather’s trade jiujitsu has been pretty good, and as stated elsewhere, eventually our pooling of depth is going to lead to a quantity for quality trade so this team can make a run in the next 3-4 years.
Agreed. Eventually we should make a trade like that, as we’ll have an excess of depth and we’ll be missing a top line winger.
The only thing is we have to make sure its the right trade, at the right time, for the right guy. We can’t go throwing all of our assets at the first sparkly thing we see.
We both know that, but a lot of people on this site and all over the place always have this grass is greener mantra that gets old.

Ding! Fries are done.
See, that’s the point I was trying to make about acquiring Bobby Ryan. You’re gonna have to utilize your depth to acquire a player for long-term success. What is the point of development and rebuilding?

unless those three or four
consist of people from this pool: Wolski, Avery, I was about to say Christensen lol, Woywittka, Bickel, Rupp, Eminger, Mats Zucharello
I will probably be very sad :(
add Feds to that, but i’de probably keep him till the offseason, no way we are resigning him unless he pulls a miracle out of his ass in the playoffs
but then again this is NY and PRO SPORTS
and we all know what happened to Hidek Matsui after the 2009 world series which the yankees won thanks to him.

BTW, CT Whale haven’t won since Dec. 31, day Sean Avery was assigned. CT is 0-9-2 with Avery on roster, though he has played only 5 of 11 games.
Can’t be a coincidence.

If the Rangers winning with Avery on the roster was a coincidence, than the Whale losing with Avery on the roster is also a coincidence.

Sather missed his chance to trade AA and get something more in return
His epic pointless streak aside, AA does not justify his pay and will never be a legitimate top-6 forward. Trading AA for some good picks would be fine with me, but I wish Sather had unloaded AA first before EC so every GM didn’t already know that we were looking to offload our underperformers. I love AA’s shooting ability but I have never been convinced of his all-around play that a lot of commentators and BSB fans seem to profess. The most obvious sign of his play that I see as a negative is that he has never stopped on the puck on the PK. It’s one of the first things that coaches stress at the midget level or lower, and I have only ever seen Anisimov twirl around when pressing. Watch Boyle or Callahan up top on the PK and the difference should be pretty apparent.
Full-team efforts are crucial to Tort’s system, and I have still yet to see how AA’s play has garnered such high expectations from everyone.
I’m sure many here will disagree, and I hate sharing negative NYR opinions but AA’s play has never made me into a believer.
The only proper nouns I capitalize are Rangers and God.

Profess? You mean by showing the stats of the level of competition he went up against and his strong production as a 23yr old?
No offense but if you think 1.8m is too much for a kid with that type of skill you are living in another world. If slats was trying to unload him there would be a line for his services and it would amount to more than a good pick.

Exactly.
Big bodied 23 year old two-way forward that’s a lock for 40+ points every year at 1.8 mil?

It seems to be that if you watched hockey earlier than the last 20 games of this season, you would have a different opinion of AA.
Over the last few years, he has been on all of our best lines. Shelley-AA-Prust, Dubi-AA-Cally, AA-Step-Gabby. There is a reason for that.
Last year his quality of competition drastically increased WHILE he increased his production.
The guy has a bad streak and now everyone wants to trade him. If you remember, about half of the commenters on this site wanted to trade Gabby last season after he struggled, and now everyone wants to trade Dubi.
We need to learn patience.
The dude is a 23 year old going against top competition putting up 40+ points every year, and his play doesn’t justify his 1.8 mil contract? GTFO of here.

AA's window isn't closed. He's only 23.
And many GMs salivate at the idea of having a two-way forward who has been coached up on the defensive side of his game. Offense takes time if you’re not a purely offensive player. Potential is a real bastard, if it’s not nurtured properly. People always tend to equate potential to “here and now”…ask Chris and Peter Ferraro.
I agree that there comes a time when players need “real” time to mature. But, there’s also a time to move a player on when the coaching and chemistry doesn’t meet, and he’s still young enough to obtain a player or two who can.
