Rangers Vs. Flyers: Rangers Continue Dominance Over Flyers
The New York Rangers continued their dominance against the Philadelphia Flyers this afternoon with an energetic 5-2 win. Artem Anisimov came away with a three point evening, and helped propel the Rangers to victory. Henrik Lundqvist also made some amazing saves to keep the Rangers on top.
Just a minute and four seconds into the first period, Artem Anisimov gave the Rangers a quick 1-0 lead. Dan Girardi's slap shot was redirected in front by Anisimov, and it beat Ilya Bryzgalov over the shoulder. Not to long after the goal, we had our first fight of the afternoon between Stu Bickel and Wayne Simmonds.
The Rangers would eventually head into the locker room with a solid 1-0 lead of their divisional opponents. After Bickel took an interference call early in the second period, he dropped the gloves with Tom "Fantasy Camp" Sestito, in his second battle of the game. Both players got their blows in and got back to some hockey.
Follow after the jump for more.
Following a Brayden Schenn penalty, Jakub Voracek led Schenn on a breakaway coming out of the box. Ryan McDonagh bobbled the puck at the blue line, after a last-ditch effort to keep it in the zone. Schenn made a nifty backhand move and beat Lundqvist top shelf, and we had a tie game.
Just four minutes later, Sestito clearly didn't have enough and dropped the gloves with Brandon Dubinsky. The play that triggered the fight was Sestito's hit on Dubinsky, which, in my mind, was a blatant charging call. Anyways, with just under 30 seconds remaining in the second period, Marian Gaborik found a hole, and beat Bryzgalov on a wrap-around.
The goal would give the Rangers a 2-1 lead heading into the intermission, and Marian Gaborik was a little banged up. He skated off with a slight limp, but was perfectly fine come the start of the third period. Just 48 seconds into the third period, Brandon Dubinsky took a lazy delay of a game penalty, and sent the Flyers to yet another power play. It didn't take long as Wayne Simmonds cashed in nine seconds later.
Not too long after, Tom Sestito was at it again with Brandon Prust and the two exchanged blows once again. Only this time, Sestito was assessed a game misconduct, and that pest was finally off the ice for good. This game was as back and forth as you can get. Michael Del Zotto would put in the go-ahead goal, and eventually the game with just 36 seconds after Simmonds had tied the game. Marian Gaborik made an excellent pass over to the streaking Del Zotto, who slapped it five-hole on Bryz.
Just twelve minutes later, Brandon Dubinsky would notch his sixth goal of the season on a beautiful interception by Brandon Prust. Boyle fed it cross-ice to Dubinsky who fired it short side on Bryzgalov, and the Rangers had a commanding 4-2 lead.
Ruslan Fedotenko finished it off with an empty net goal to seal the deal for the Rangers, and they continued their dominance over the Flyers this season. The Rangers will be in action again, this Tuesday, against the New Jersey Devils at MSG once again.

Punkville
i think the Flyers should keep playing Sestito and Rinaldo, lots and lots of minutes. They really are the key to their success, no? ; )
Good game for Arti, hope he’s turning a corner.
Shoot the puck Barry!!!

What a dirtbag
He’s a throwback goon, seemingly no skill beyond fighting. I know Rupp regretted his “chirp” at Shelley but he’d be pretty accurate calling Sestito irrelevant, too.
in case you are wondering
“If you care who is scouting this Rangers-Flyers game, the Habs, Lightning, Canucks, Stars and Hurricanes have scouts here today.”
Nice win today
I apologize for butting in with such an off-topic question, but was wondering if someone could help me identify these two guys? They both look familiar but I just can’t put the names to the faces.

I believe that Freddy Sjostrom and Fedor Tyutin.

Thanks. I thought that was Tyutin but comparing to some other photos I just couldn’t be sure. I appreciate the help.

Figured that. :) It’s just, I’m curious. There’s been a lot of talk about Christensen being the “invisible man” with tons of talent but who just can’t put it together somehow. Is that what Sjostrom’s problem was? I felt kind of sad about how his career with NY ended with a whimper.
He really wasn’t that talented he was just an energy 4th liner, similar to Prust but not as tough…

Good penalty killer and good speed, chipped in a few shorties if I remember correctly. One of a couple likeable guys in an era of hired guns.

Thank you my team!
Very good and solid win today for the RANGERS!.The only thing is ..i was a little scared when Gabby was hit so hard and barely stood up..but then a relaxed when he scored,he should be O.K. now..Tuesday Devils!! ..go Rangers!!!!

Artem Anisimov joking about the media around his locker: “Too many guys. Come on. I don’t score for a few games, you don’t come to me.”

Anisimov on his goal: “I didn’t know. I go on the bench and I go, ‘Whoa. I score?’ Nice.”

a mini bryzgalov when it comes to media quotes haha
I really hate Rinaldo
I didnt think it was possible to find a bigger piece of shit than Carcillo. How many times is he going to take runs at our players before someone drops the gloves and cracks him in the fucking head?
Sestito is just a little punk. He’s been pulling acts like this all the time. He did it in pre-season against Deveaux. Even that hit threw at Dubinsky today was a borderline charge. Hope they throw the book at this fool again. Annoys me lol.

That it was, and Pruster drawing him into his third fight of the game. The place went nuts when he skated off. With good reason too.

Pretty sure it was Rinaldo
Both of them are dirty trash goons. This is why they cant take fighting out of the game. Punks like him and Sestito need to get what’s coming to them.
Awesome!
Went to this game, my first ever @ MSG, my g/fs first ever live hockey game.
It was great, love MSG atmosphere.
Flyers are cheap ass players. Cally had a hit by the bench in the first, guy grabbed his face and threw him to the ice, of course no call. Sestito needs to get off the damn ice.
Gabby looked like he was flying all night. The penalty kill near the end was awesome, crowd was roaring during and after that, Cally with some key blocks.
Overall i am so friggin happy i went to this game, awesome night, awesome win. LGR.
It definitely was awesome today at MSG, closest to a playoff atmosphere as you’ll get..at least for a regular season game.

Yeah, sometimes it seems like that depending on the quality of the audio. It was definitely booming in person. Especially went the “You can’t beat us” chants came raining down.
by Bryan Winters on Feb 5, 2012 8:23 PM EST up reply actions
The “you cant beat us chant” in the 3rd was great. It seemed to start on the opposite side of the rink, each time it got louder and closer to our section until it was the only thing you could hear haha. Some good Flyers Suck chants too
We had a bunch of guys by us yelling at Sestito to go back to “fantasy camp”, i couldnt help but laugh.
And for that I apologize...
I think I will continue to crap on Artie and Dubi. Whenever i do they come back and actually look like bonafide hockey players.

Fun Stat Fact
courtesy of the Flyers website (odd I know)
The Rangers have some really impressive numbers, which would suggest they’re onto something big come playoff time; the Blueshirts are 28-0-2 when scoring three goals or more in a game this year, and are now 20-0-2 when leading after two periods this season. Last year they were a perfect 29-0-0, so they are 49-0-2 in their last 51 contests when holding a lead at the second intermission.
All well and good but that’s regular season only. If you remember, they led Washington after the 2nd period of Gm 4 last season. Up 3-0 after 2, on home ice, down 2-1 in the series. Hang on for the win, and its a 2-2 series. Instead, they gave up 2 goals in the first 5 minutes, and lost a heartbreaker in OT.

i wish Rinaldo would get suspended
indefinitely for the shit he pulled today.. that guy doesn’t deserve to play hockey
The flyer fans
kept saying yesterday how our players start fights and just hug and that they’re pussys….meanwhile their big goon fighting a guy half his size does this.

Webster, Canty, Tuck, and Osimanura TOGETHER had 4 tackles combined
for the entire game.
Kiawanuka had ZERO tackles
I believe Kiawanuka and Osimynura will not be back next season. Hard to believe selling yourself as a star could be proved by this game.
they had no JAM

Once again the Rangers have shown to be the better team than the trash from Philly called Hockey Players. The better goaltender, defenders and exciting players they have drafted.
Yes we have a goaltender that has proven his worth time after time and doesn’t need to be over paid like that big universe guy. Another fantastic game and played a big 3rd period to get the full 2 points.
Very happy and still in 1st place in the east.

It’s obvious the Flyers can’t play with the Rangers straight up, especially with the big contrast in goalies, so they continuously resort to the BS tactics they have been always known for. The amount of subtle infractions they got away with yesterday is typical and what the Rangers will have to overcome when they play them. At this point, the way the Rangers are playing, it will be disappointing if they don’t win at least a round or two in the playoffs. Making the conference finals would be a great goal to achieve and something to build on if the Cup is not attained this year. The King is just phenomenal and the Flyers can choke on their $50M bust in nets as they STILL have goaltender issues. And the best part is that they still have, what, 8 years left on that contract? I love it.
Rinaldo and Sestito have no business in the league. Rinaldo getting away with about 3 charging/boarding non-calls is the kind of stuff that the refs let them get away with. Rinaldo freight trains Bickel into the boards and Bickel gets a penalty for “interference” after Rinaldo drops to the ice like he’s Bill Barber. Ever notice how the Flyers never stay on their feet when there is even a hint of a hook or grab? Just a sleezy team all around.
Montreal typical

It's dangerous
There is such a temptation to “get even” but the Rangers have done really, really well this year especially against the flyers, continuing to play hockey while they focus on bullying.
It’s really a tough thing to do but if they can stay concentrated on attacking and playing the game, they can take advantage of it. The Rangers finally drew a penalty in (I think) the third when the flyers were gooning it up. Just gets a little scary when they do rail someone.. you hope nobody gets hurt.
Luckily they play quite well 4v4 and on the PK that if they should take a retaliation penalty, it’s not so bad… at this point, I’d almost rather they play 4v4 than on the PP…
i really wanted to see Rinaldo decked by Bickel
but that fight never happened :(
