Selanne? Smyth? Nash? Ryan?

So what do we think the chances are of any one of these guys coming to us at the trade deadline on Feb 27th? All around the rumor mill these 3 names have been circling around NYR.

Should the Rangers stand pat and take what they have into the playoffs? Or is a move needed to wake up the powerplay that we need so badly headed into the post season?

What is everyones thoughts on these 4 guys?

Any one of them but Smyth.

Nash will cost, but I’d do it.

Ryan (to me) is the most worthy.

Selanne…I would do it, but I’d rather see him finish his career in Winnipeg, where it all began.

what makes you say no to Smyth? Overrated?

by StoneWallHank on Feb 6, 2012 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

cause he is a 3rd liner and does not really add scoring pop……would only be worth it for a late pick.

My buddy Brandon C., who said to me (and I still chuckle over) brian Rolston isn’t a good pick up because he’s super slow on ice. The same is said and seen in Ryan Smyth. At $6.25 million, he’s not worth dumping trade chips for (especially given the defensive style played by this team. Saying that, a deal for him would hurt this team.

Although Nash makes $1.55 million more, he’s eight years younger, and is a much better defensive player than Smyth (although Nash plays for a lousy defensive team).

Ryan makes $1.15 million less, and is a fit to either the Rangers or the Maple Leafs (both of Torts and Ron Wilson’s systems are similar). Hard forechecking, tight point defense, with a huge shot from just about anywhere…he’s a fit, and worth giving up player(s) for.

The amount for Smyth doesn’t matter. At all.

He’s purely a rental.

With Nash, his cap hit will hurt us. Three forwards making a combined 22 mil? That’s a bad idea I think, especially when most likely none of them will go over a PPG.

to me, in the grand scheme of things, Smyth for the proverbial 3rd rounder for this year, and then Parise after the season. I was advocating a Nash deal but that would probably require Dubi, AA, plus plus plus. whereas Parise costs the players you jettison to get under the cap and plus he’s a better 2 way player than Nash and would fit Torts’ system better. my humble opinion.

by Richter1994 on Feb 6, 2012 4:40 PM EST reply actions

There is no guarantee we get Parise, I just don’t see it happening. I’m not sure I refrain from pulling the trigger on another deal beause we might have a shot at him. Nash would be interesting…Ryan as well. Nash perhaps more because he’s found a way to be a very good player with almost no support for most of his career. He might come here and have a Jerome Iginla like impact for this team.

the problem is whether the Rangers want to fit another high priced player on the team. I agrre with you, Nash gets a bum rap as I think he plays much better on the D side than he gets credit for. forget his +/-, his goalies are awful and have contributed to that. There are mixed signals as to whether Nash is available now or will be after the season, if ever. I think he can be had for a nice haul. He’s been there for 9 years believe it or not and he’s still only 27. but they went for it this year and it was a bust for the CBJ. time to dismantle and start over. I have said a package of Dubi, AA, and MDZ would have to be offered as I don’t think Sather would ever trade Kreider. Parise just costs $$ and Dubi would certainly have to be traded for picks/prospects (Edmonton?) for cap space.

by Richter1994 on Feb 6, 2012 7:29 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe, probably, NOOOOOOOOOO, only if we sell out.

I like Selanne’s skill, but I might be more partial to Smyth because he’s more rounded and would give us some much needed net presence.

Ugh, Nash. He’s not producing up to that contract, which lasts for another 6 years.

Ryan…I don’t see why Anaheim moves a proven goal scorer on a good contract who’s only 24. Unless they’re getting a great center in return (which is a big need for them to play behind Getzlaf), I don’t see them moving him.

Out of curiosity, which team did you play roller for?

by tommydrum33 on Feb 6, 2012 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

Would prefer trading essentially nothing (mid-pick) for someone like Smyth/Selanne/Ruutu than and arm and three legs for Nash/Parise. All that would do is cost a ton, and make the scoring more top-heavy.

Smyth is not going nywhere…….Selanne would command at least a high pick and in Rutuu, Carolina is rumored to want a 1st rounder…..so no thanks on all of them. Watch Selanne do his best impression of EC against the Bruins or Failers.

We’ve discussed this a boat load of times already. I can’t wait till the deadline passes.

I’m okay with adding some depth if it doesn’t cost too much (Prospal/Smyth/Boyes), and by too much I mean anything better than a 3rd round pick or a roster player.

Also, I don’t want this team to be in a position where we have 4 guys making 30 million. The only exception I would make is trading Dubi for picks/prospects, signing Parise, and going from there.

why not if the deal is right? one of the best LW in the NHL. but I do prefer Parise for the way our team plays.

by Richter1994 on Feb 7, 2012 6:15 AM EST up reply actions

Because the deal wont be right. They are not giving him away for free so on top of all you have to give up you still have his contract that he will never produce up to.

I love the guy don’t get me wrong but they overpaid him to be the face of the franchise. We don’t need to pay for that.

His cap hit is that of a PPG player so we’d have to gut the team for him..also he’s not a PPG player.

by KingHenrik on Feb 7, 2012 7:51 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

In a cap world, we need to spend our money wisely. You need to have players whose play is more valuable than their cap hit.

As good as Nash is, he’s not worth the money he makes. If we trade for him, which will entail us giving up WAAAYYY too much, we’ll have 3 forwards, all on the wrong side of 27, making PPG money when they aren’t putting up a PPG.

It kills the depth.

That’s why for roughly the same money, signing Parise as a free agent makes much more sense. Right at 27, not quite PPG but still damn close, game changing skill, and only would have to move one $4m player off our roster.

by BigB22 on Feb 7, 2012 10:11 AM EST up reply actions

my ultimate choice is Parise BTW but you have to ask about Nash, at least.

by Richter1994 on Feb 7, 2012 10:57 AM EST up reply actions

Sorry, Nash at $7.8m is just a non-starter for me.

Exactly.

7.8 mil for a guy who MIGHT crack 70 points if he has a good year.

Add onto that the CBJ is going to want Dubi + Artie +, and its really just a losing situation for us.

Be patient, wait till free agency, and go from there. If a guy like Parise becomes available and we can sign him, than you can trade Dubi for picks/prospects.

fellas, fellas, fellas. If a Rick Nash is available then you at least ask, as the highly-esteemed Caerid11 (you have my $20, right?) correctly points out. First rule of business, you ask and listen. If you don’t like what you hear then you walk away. Like the NY lottery, hey, you never know.

by Richter1994 on Feb 7, 2012 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

But more and more: rental this year, sign Parise after July 1, and trade Dubi to the Oilers for Omark (I kept calling him Lindberg, lol) and picks/prospects.

by Richter1994 on Feb 7, 2012 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

I’m fine with that Richter.

I’m 100% fine with signing Parise and trading Dubi for picks/prospects. Why? Because that’s a net gain.

Even if we could get Nash for extremely cheap, his contract immediately makes it not worth it. Regardless of what team he’s on, he’s being paid 7.8 mil for 65 points a year.

That’s a deal-breaker for me.

The thing about Nash is…even if he comes cheap, he’s still not worth it. He’s damn near an 8m cap-hit until like 2018. You can find guys equal or close to his production for a lot less.

by Caerid11 on Feb 7, 2012 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

Same. 2.5 mil difference. Move Rupp and that’s another 4 million dollar player..

by Stuart Pinnetti on Feb 6, 2012 11:06 PM EST reply actions

1. Ducks management said they wouldn’t move Selanne or Koivu.
2. Smyth apparently doesn’t want to be moved and he is a huge cap hit, even for one year.
3. Nash… no. Too big of a contract. Just no. It would cost too damn much to bring Rick Nash here and we’d have him for another half a decade.
4. Ryan? Again? Meh.

When Ryan was first discussed as a trade option he had like 4 goals. Now he has 20. I would say it was all motivation to get him going and it looks like it worked.
