Rangers Vs. Hurricanes: Great All Around Play Earns Rangers 3-2 Win Over The Hurricanes
The New York Rangers came away with their third straight victory tonight, with a well deserved 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. After falling behind early in the second, the Rangers found a way to fight back and dominate for the rest of the game.
The first period started off with a ton of speed coming from both teams. Each team had their fair share of chances, but neither team gave an inch. After a very fast paced first period, the game would head into the intermission with a 0-0 tie. Brandon Dubinsky took a late penalty which carried over into the second period.
Just as the penalty was about to expire, Jeff Skinner ripped a slap shot from the high slot that beat Martin Biron. Biron got a piece of it, but it wasn't enough to keep it out of the net, and the Hurricanes took an early 1-0 lead. The Rangers amped up the pressure following the goal, and found a way to get back into the game shortly after.
Follow after the jump for more.
Artem Anisimov was able to put the Rangers on the board with a terrific shot from just on top of the left circle. Derek Stepan made a great play along the boards to make an outlet pass to Gaborik, who dropped the puck back to Anisimov. Anisimov finished it off with a great wrist shot that beat Cam Ward over the the left shoulder.
Just six minutes later, Marian Gaborik would put the Rangers ahead with his 30th goal of the season. Derek Stepan chopped at the puck, which was to the right of Cam Ward, and it popped up into the air. The puck wound up falling behind Ward, where Gaborik got a stick on the loose puck and knocked it into the net. This is the seventh time in Gaborik's career that he has put up 30 goals in a season.
It also put Gaborik over a point-per-game with 21 points in his last 21 games; he is having himself quite the season, after a very disappointing one last season. After putting together a very energetic second period, the Rangers came out even better in the third period.
Just 1:57 after the opening face-off, Brian Boyle and Brandon Prust connected with a pretty passing play to put the Rangers up 3-1. The puck wound up bouncing off of the linesmen, where Ruslan Fedotenko sprung Prust and Boyle on an eventual 2-on-1. Boyle had great patience to wait out the defensemen, and slip it over to Prust for the tap in.
Shortly after that, it was noted that Michael Del Zotto suffered a hip injury in the second period, and would not return to the game. At the time, the Rangers held a 3-1 lead, so it could have just been a precautionary move to hold him out for the game. Del Zotto originally agitated his hip against the Buffalo Sabres when he hit the side of the net awkwardly, that left him in some pain. It is unknown if the injury is a result of the past, or whether it is a brand new injury.
The Rangers did a great job to shut down the Hurricanes for basically most of the third period. John Mitchell would eventually take a double-minor for high-sticking that sent the Canes to late power play in the third period. Jay Harrison would find the back of the net with 40 seconds remaining in the game, and it cut the Rangers lead to just a single goal.
However, the Rangers were able to hold off the Hurricanes for the final 20 seconds and came away with a well-deserved 3-2 win. The Rangers will play the second game of the back-to-back tomorrow night against the Tampa Bay Lightning. It is projected that Henrik Lundqvist will return in between the pipes, but only time will tell.

how Scott
got through an entire game without seriously injuring someone or taking a goonish penalty is just beyond me.
@btown46
Was not able to watch the game, is this comment based on how he played tn (was he running around like a good?) or just his reputation?

just being sarcastic
he was mainly invisible…didn’t look bad or good…just commentary on people upset with the signing, complaining that we don’t need another “goon,” and that he’d take dumb penalties and compromise his defensive positioning to “prove himself” or something.
@btown46
Not My Take
He looked solid positionally, did not hurt us defensively, cleared the puck when needed, and threw the body around a bit. He’s not going to light up the scoreboard, but he was not a liability last night.

Nice win. Love that we’re consistently beating teams we should beat, something we didn’t do last year.

He took a shot off of the arm, he was right back out there on the next shift though. He looked fine after that, seemed to be just a stinger.

No mention..
..of Dubi sitting out two (2) entire periods, I’m surprised.
As for the game itself, the players who needed to step up did. The GAS line was doing their job tonight end to end. I think Torts got a little too line-change happy with Mitchell getting moved around. I know he hates running four (4) lines, but taking Dubi out screwed things up.
I still think Prust and Boyle are some of the hardest and most “chemistry” covered duo the team has. I sure hope they get treated well when their time comes.
Biron had a solid night, standing on his head at times even though the shots were limited.
88pts for first in the league with games in hand. Looking good with the home stretch.
boyle signed in the summer
and yeah, he was treated quite well…Prust is a UFA after this season, but apparently he’s in contract talks
@btown46
Boyles signed till 2013-14 I think but prust is a free agent at seasons end, I think he’d be more than happy to resign and his raise wouldnt be much I’d imagine from the 800k or so he is making.. We’re in first place for the moment, STL n VAN are playing tonight winner gets tops in the league

Not too bad
But definitely not BR’s expectations, .7 would be nice but he can’t be a .5 player throughout the season. Still, don’t think he has the right line mates and shouldn’t be facing top competition. That’s not how he was successful in his career.
I have a man-crush on Anisimov

he’s playing good in other areas… you see what i did there… Dubi has been invisible offensively all season, but he’s been given a pass on his contract 4.2 because he can play defense… and he was supposed to add to scoring this year with atleast 20 goals… not saying it was you but there are those who think dubi is worth his 4.2 mil contract…
on richards… he’s given up some of his offense to work within the system which has hurt his point totals…
@clalicata17
+1. People were panicked last summer thinking that Dubinsky wasnt going to get signed.

I’m pretty sure Richards alone gave up 3 scoring chances last night.

richards looked better i thought
he seemed to hold the puck for too long but his chances and space were way better then what we have seen. hes finally getting into those areas where he can be effective. another few games like that and i have no doubt he will start to produce
He looked puzzled out there at times. He had nothing but time on various occasions and got no where. I’m not sure if it’s his fault or maybe noone was open to pass to, but as a fan is frustrating to watch a point per game player look lost out there. As many of you stated already I’d like to see him with Gaborik.

Richards was carrying the puck on a 3 on 2 break. I don’t recall who it was but he had an open man on the right for a great one-timer opportunity, but Richards instead held onto the puck and ran out of room resulting in a low percentage shot and a missed scoring opportunity.
He perplexes me at times.
same
my biggest beef last night with him and this is recurring is his poor choices in the defensive end. 3 bad passes last night resulting in 2 scoring chances for car.

Near the end of the 1st period there was a scrum. Dubi grabbed the stick from one of the Carolina players (forgot who) and threw it into the opposite corner, so he got a 2 minute unsportsmanlike penalty. Carolina scored on the ensuing PP in the 2nd period.

Remember
Just last game MDZ got a minor for kicking a stick to Brian Boyle (that he didn’t know was a penalty). 100% guarantee Tort’s read them the riot act about blowing a game thru mindless stupidity.
Dubinsky ripped the stick out well after the whistle, but didn’t earn the minor until mindlessly hurling said lumber while looking directly at the ref.
We can logically infer that John Tortorella does not respond well to insubordination.
Let me know how that works out for you . . .
With Cally out
Dubi’s actions last night are more dissappointing. Guys have to pick up slack and play smart. He’s been a part of this from the beginning and we expect him to raise his game and step up as he’s done before. Instead he’s just imploding.

Scott is HUGE
There was one instance where the play was stopping in front of the Carolina net and Scott gave a little stick shove to, I believe, Spacek. Spacek turns around and was about to respond but then he looks up and then it was as if he was saying to himself, “Oh, umm, okay. Gulp.” I would love to see Scott hammering on Chara along the boards. One of the only guys in the NHL who could probably push Chara around.

Love this team. And love Dubi though he is not playing like a player that wants to stay a Ranger. I don’t know what his problem is. Unless I misjudged him which is a distinct possibility and he is not the player I thought he was.
I think he is incredibly frustrated by his performance, bothered by the trade talk and feels pressure from the contract.
He is an emotional player and is struggling to deal with all the adversity. This isn’t going to work itself out in next two months. He needs an offseason to look back on things.
I still have hope he can pull it together next season and put 45 points up by the trade deadline so we can trade his ass for value and free up money for RFA class in 2013.

"Fantasy, reality, science Fiction. Which is which? Who can tell?"
after watching dubinsky sit on the bench for the final two periods showed me how expendable he really is. feds and mitchell can slot right in to play along with boyle and prust.
i understand it was only one game but this was my argument that if we picked up a goal scorer and traded dubinsky we wouldn’t be any worse off defensively.
that's something to be addressed in the offseason
of course if dubi has an invisible playoff run it won’t do much for his value and will be a moot point anyway

Torts wasn’t lying when he said John Scott was “big”. That guy is a f’n beast…he makes Boyle and rupper look average. Dissapointed in dubi’s penalty….he could have really stepped up last night. Hopefully he will have an edge to his game tonight.

tell me Skinner didnt poop a little in his pants after he cross checked Staal into the boards. He looks up and has Rupp, Bickell and Scott all trying to get at him. I laughed a little beer through my nose on that scene.

I think what Dubi does in the playoffs will determine whether he will have a future in this organization or not.
If he turns it up again, he’s probably kept. If not, we’ll… we shall see.

My biggest problem with Dubinsky is that he’s not a smart player IMO. He doesn’t think the game well enough to be successful. He has bad hands and therefore should never be out on the PP. And he reverses the puck way too much instead of advancing it. This often leads to turnovers and opportunities the other way. It boggles my mind that he’s getting paid as much as he is. He needs to go so we can free up some cap space for 1 or 2 more productive players.
