Rangers Vs. Lightning: Keys To The Game

Photo

The New York Rangers will be right back in action tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning for their second game of the back-to-back. The Rangers came away with a very hard fought 3-2 win against the Carolina Hurricanes last night, and they need to keep up the intensity. The Rangers will be without Ryan Callahan and Michael Del Zotto once again tonight so it won't be an easy task. With that said, here are tonight's keys to the game.

Stay Defensive: As I stated above, Michael Del Zotto will be sitting out tonight after re-aggravating his hip on a late check from Derek Joslin. Jeff Woywitka will be making his return to the line-up tonight, but the only downside is him not playing for a while. The Rangers will be a little shorthanded on defense, so the forwards will have to help on the back check a lot, tonight.

All Four Lines Contributing: The Rangers were pretty much dominant after falling behind last night to the Hurricanes. It helped that basically every line was contributing both offensively and defensively all game long. The Rangers will need to do that tonight, and hopefully the offense will come.

Without calli and mdz our offense is gonna b worse. Although prust and Boyle have been great picking up the slack. Hope woywitka doesn’t kill us tonight and hope to see Scott bash someones head in for fun the big goof.

According to the NHLPA Player Poll for 2011-2012 The Rangers are

Poll

the fourth most overated team with 9%

1st: Canucks
2nd: Maple Leafs
3rd: Capitals

What a load of crap, we are not overrated, in fact nobody ever talks about us. Even if we arent playing the Devils its Kovalchuck this Kovalchuck that on NBC Sports.

by rain-g-errs on Mar 2, 2012 5:13 PM EST reply actions

That's just silly

Hard to be overrated when you are 1st in the east and challenging for 1st in the NHL.

by I.LikeMittens on Mar 2, 2012 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

Points Percentage we are First in the League

It just doesn’t make sense, the media spends more time on Washington, Pittsburgh, Philthadelphia, Vancouver, Toronto, Boston and New Jersey than all the other teams in the NHL combined.

We are definitely not overrated, we hardly get talked about on NBC Sports and the NHL network especially.

hagelin faster than gabby no? is he not on the list because he’s unknown around the league?

most likely

I was kinda surprised to see Gabby up that high. I mean Kessel and Darren Helm are pretty effing fast too. Helm is a monster.

Probably the more accurate thing to say is that Gabby has the most explosive first stride and fastest acceleration. Helm/Kessel probably are faster but it takes them longer to get there.

Why are we playing woywittka over Eminger?

doesn’t make much sense… Eminger has never cost us a game this season.

Guessing because he's a lefty?

Although I’m pretty sure Eminger can play both sides capably. Maybe Woywitka has been showing better stuff in practice? Or Torts wants to get him involved once in a while in case of injury? Who knows.

one thing people didn't really talk about today...

Artie has arguably the best shot on the team…he needs to shoot more…if he does, it will go in; he has a laser.

by Town on Mar 2, 2012 5:49 PM EST up reply actions

He needs to shoot

from at least the dots and in, otherwise his shot will rise above the post and hit the boards. lol but yeah when he gets enough time and space to get his shot off from that close he is a monster.

i see what you did there, unfortunately getting that shot off is something arty needs to work on, his release is far from lightning quick IMO :p

Tortorella said in TB he would have benched Dubinsky if enough Fs were healthy. The Torts-Dubi relationship might be strained beyond

jesus what is going on

as much as Dubi isn’t performing, why does torts hate him so much. You can only be a hardass for so long i mean cut the guy a break once in a while.

by rain-g-errs on Mar 2, 2012 6:09 PM EST up reply actions

He "hates" him

because Dubi has been non existent this year and has refused to up his game when he’s been given the chance to

I can think of 3 or so penalties in the last month that Dubi just should not have taken. What else do you think is contributing to it, he seems to be doing an alright job of backchecking and playing defense. I mean obviously his production is down, you think Torts is mad at him also about that?

by rain-g-errs on Mar 2, 2012 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

they didn't pay him 4 million to be a back checker

Dubinsky was supposed to be a part of this team’s offense and he hasn’t been

Ouch

Sounds like Torts isn’t messing around with this one. Dubi better shape up or the team will definitely part ways with him this summer.

by I.LikeMittens on Mar 2, 2012 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

shit. i didn’t think he would take it that far. dubi better play smart tonight.

anyway first goal hagelin!

Torts on Dubi
"I thought it was quite honestly a ridiculous penalty, at a time of the season when you’ve got 20 games left, that we need to be working on other things as far as details than that nonsense," Tortorella said prior to Friday’s game at Tampa Bay Times Forum. "And quite honestly, if other people were healthy tonight, he wouldn’t be playing tonight. As much as I like this kid, and as much as I think he can do some good things for us, we need to start seeing it now – not that bull(crap), but play and try to help us."

by rain-g-errs on Mar 2, 2012 6:13 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think he has it out for Dubi (a la Avery), Dubi pretty much deserves this.

by BigB22 on Mar 2, 2012 6:24 PM EST up reply actions

Not that I doubt Torts resolve, but its an easy thing to say in a hypothetical.

He could have benched Dubi moved Bickel up to forward and played Eminger.

That would be ballsy as hell.

I've said it before....

This year Dubi looks like he got his contract and decided that he was a top 6 guy and no longer had to do the dirty work that got him there. He hasnt been as physical this year as in the past; doesnt go to the crease for the dirty goals; just looks like he lost his spark. Maybe it was because he wasnt even considered for Captaincy let alone an “A”.
Bottom line – he has played far below expectations and his past performances. No one to blame but himself.

It would be really nice to see the following this game regardless of the final score

1. Arty reloading his weapon.
2. Dubi playing well and possibly scoring or setting up some plays.

YES~!!!

Soooo, something to flip to during commercials tonight – Kreider @ BC against last place Vermont, is being televised on CBS Sports Network (?) which Time Warner customers have for free on channel 467 – one down from NHL Network, which I now see is no longer free, probably since March 1…

Wish I had enough time in my night to DVR the 2nd game and watch it later but just ain’t gonna happen.

Who is faster..Gabby or Hagalin?.i,d like to see that..I guess Gabby has had a groin problem..not now.so he is more careful…and I don,t think it matters,.. I like them both, tonight will be tough again…just get 2 points, its a back to back.game..and Sunday Boston at home..so the schedule is really tight….Go my rangers,go!!!

by captain_ivo on Mar 2, 2012 6:42 PM EST reply actions

It may be a matter of them being close in speed, and Hagelin is quicker while Gaborik is faster.

yeah i hope so

We’ve all been waiting for him to just explode and get back to old Dubi.

At this point he’s even money to take a major boarding penalty and give Torts an embolism.

And good for Torts to rip Dubi. At this point, he can’t play any worse, and you can’t have him and his attitude playing like it is come playoff time. At this point Newbury might be a better option.
