New York Rangers News: Krieder, Hrivik Highlight Final Roster Cuts

Bruce Bennett

The New York Rangers have made their final roster cuts prior to the season opener, and they are now down to 24 players.

According to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, the New York Rangers have trimmed their roster down to 24 players, and finally have their opening night roster set.

Conor Allen, Stu Bickel, Marek Hrivik, Chris Kreider, Oscar Lindberg, Brandon Mashinter, and Darroll Powe were among the seven players released by the Rangers, and will be assigned to the Hartford Wolfpack. Powe, Mashinter, and Bickel are also required to pass through waivers for 24 hours before they can be assigned to the AHL.

Obviously the major surprises here are Kreider and Hrivik. Kreider was essentially placed in a top-six role to start the preseason, and it was basically his spot to lose. He struggled right out of the gate, but eventually came to form in the final game against the Los Angeles Kings. Had he played that way throughout the other games, he would likely be suiting up on opening night in Phoenix. As far as Hrivik goes, he had a very, very strong preseason but was simply out-dueled by Jesper Fast.

There was some major competition throughout the lineup, which is a pretty good sign for the Rangers. They will have a massive pool of players to choose from in the event of a player call up.

Following all of the cuts, the Rangers final roster will look as follows:

Forwards: Arron Asham, Brian Boyle, Derick Brassard, Ryan Callahan, Derek Dorsett, Jesper Fast, Carl Hagelin, J.T. Miller, Dominic Moore, Rick Nash, Benoit Pouliot, Taylor Pyatt, Brad Richards, Derek Stepan, and Mats Zuccarello

Defense: Michael Del Zotto, Justin Falk, Dan Girardi, Ryan McDonagh, John Moore, Marc Staal, Anton Stralman

Goalies: Henrik Lundqvist, Martin Biron

The Rangers still have one final move to make, which will likely be assigning Carl Hagelin to the team's LTIR list. This would make Hagelin unavailable for the first ten games of the season, but will also free up $1.9 million in crucial cap space.
