Derek Dorsett Expected To Miss 4-6 Weeks With Broken Fibula

Justin K. Aller

From bad to worse.

The New York Rangers had something of a numbers problem the past week or so. With Ryan Callahan returning to duty, and just one open slot for three players the Rangers needed to do something to make room. So they waived Taylor Pyatt (who was picked up by the Pittsburgh Penguins) leaving them with just a single extra player on their roster.

Before the Rangers' 5-2 loss to the Penguins on Friday it appeared as though that extra player was going to be Benoit Pouliot, until it was changed to be J.T. Miller. Alain Vigneault said it had nothing to do with Miller's play, but it was more of a numbers game.

Now there's not much of a choice. Derek Dorsett broke his fibula in the loss to the Penguins blocking a shot, and will miss the next 4-6 weeks. That's a problem for the Rangers, even if it does ease the numbers game problem. Dorsett has become a vital part of this Rangers' team in terms of grit, toughness, depth and forechecking ability. Not many guys do what he does, even if his play doesn't bring much offense to the table.

As of now you would have to assume Miller will be playing every night from here on out -- which makes sense since he's been very solid in this most recent call up. But it appears as though Glen Sather is getting closer and closer to making some moves, so maybe this is something that will stir that pot a little more.

Thoughts guys?
