NHL Draft 2014: New York Rangers select Tyler Nanne with No. 142 overall pick

Matt Christians

The Rangers added another Edina High School product with a fifth round selection.

The Rangers stayed busy on Day 2 of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, selecting Tyler Nanne of Minnesota (Edina High School). Nanne is an Ohio State commit, and one of the top high school hockey players to come out of Minnesota last year.

This, from SBN College Hockey about the grandson of hockey hall of fame player Lou Nanne, back when Tyler committed to be a Buckeye in January:

Nanne is capable of playing both forward and defense, but has focused more on playing the blue line in the past year. He's a smaller defenseman, listed at 5'10" 175 lbs., but has elite-level agility and a surprisingly heavy shot for his size.

Nanne is one of the favorites to win the prestigious Minnesota Mr. Hockey Award, and is a potential NHL Draft pick this summer. His cousin Vinni Lettieri plays for the University of Minnesota. Nanne will play for Steve Rohlik at Ohio State. It is a nice pickup for the Buckeyes who lost several commits when Mark Osiecki was let go this past summer.

And this from SBN College Hockey's draft profile of Nanne:

Nanne is a smaller defenseman, and while he doesn't have incredible straight-line speed, he has very quick feet and excellent edge-work that makes him very agile and strong on his skates. He also has a very heavy shot for a player his size.

Discipline will be one of the biggest knocks on Nanne. In about 20 viewings this year, he had a penalty in about 17 of them that was some combination of stupid, selfish, or dirty. His size might also draw concerns about how he will hold up against more physical competition.

...

A big part of the reason Nanne will get drafted is because of his potential as a power play quarterback some day. His ability to move laterally along the blue line with the puck and his heavy shot makes him very dangerous with the man advantage. He doesn't project as a player that could handle really serious minutes at the pro level, but could hold his own as a second or third pairing defenseman.

In his senior season for Edina, Nanne posted seven goals and 41 assists. Nanne will join Steven Fogarty of Notre Dame as collegiate hockey players from Edina who are also Rangers prospects.
