NJ owner Jeff Vanderbeek, NJ GM Lou Lamoriello and Ilya Kovalchuk's agent Jay Grossman met with NHL execs at league's NY office today. Hmmm?

— E.J. Hradek from ESPN Could this mean that the Devils have finished working on a more cap friendly deal with Kovalchuk and they're seeing if the NHL is okay with it? We'll see... UPDATE: Dmitry Chesnokov reports that the deal w/ Kovalchuk will be announced in the next 24 hours. Update #2: Tom Gulitti has confirmed that the Devils have not submitted a contract for Kovalchuk. Lou, Grossman and Vanderbeek were discussing the structure of the contract. Update #3: Tom Gulitti's post has this quote from Bill Daly: " 'There was no new contract submitted," Daly said. The National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) released the following statement today regarding the rejection of Ilya Kovalchuk’s contract with the New Jersey Devils by the National Hockey League (NHL):

"The NHLPA is currently analyzing the basis upon which the NHL rejected the contract between the New Jersey Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk. We are evaluating the options available to us under the terms established in the CBA. The NHLPA will have no further comment at this time." – Jonathan Weatherdon, NHLPA Spokesperson
