It was an odd day for New York Rangers hockey. It started very early, with news of Cam Talbot getting the start Monday night in goal over Henrik Lundqvist. It continued with a bad loss to the Jets, and a few other story lines. It was just one day, 24 hours, but a lot happened. Here are your morning notes.
Just like there was an overreaction over Lundqvist sitting a second game, there will likely be an overreaction over Talbot's performance Monday night. Aside from the fourth goal, there's really not too much you can fault Talbot for on the night. Another lackluster, inconsistent performance felled the Rangers against a banged-up Winnipeg team in a very winnable home game. Some recaps of the game. While it's been Lundqvist who's impending free agency has garnered the majority of the headlines, the heart and soul of the team, Ryan Callahan, is also in a contract year. But there's no movement on that front. [NY Post]
Interestingly enough, as that update came in, Alain Vigneault again harped on the Rangers inconsistent offense, and Callahan, who had not scored in his last eight games, found the back of the net against the Jets. [Blueshirts Blog]
Again, to reiterate what shouldn't need to be said, but clearly needs to be said, Talbot poses no threat to "dethrone" the incumbent Lundqvist. [NY Post]
After taking a nasty elbow from Tom Sestito on Saturday, Michael Del Zotto is 'OK,' but Sestito was dealt no supplementary discipline. [NY Post]
