Recapping the preseason opener; Lombardi's second chance; Nash was uncomfortable after concussion

Today's New York Rangers notes.

Andy Marlin-USA TODAY Sports

Something strange happened Monday night, something that hasn't happened for quite some time. Hockey was played! And if you're of that logical group of people that's capable of rational thinking and whatnot, you're not freaking out over anything that happened against the Devils. And with that, let's get to those notes.

The Rangers dropped their preseason opener to the Devils on Monday night. Big whoop. Didn't even count! But here are some things to know.

  • Ryan Malone isn't the only Ranger getting a second chance of sorts, as after he spent a year in Europe, Matthew Lombardi is hoping to stick in the NHL. In one of his first big opportunities Monday night, the reviews weren't glowing. [NY Post] [Newsday]

It won't really come as a surprise to anyone who closely followed the Rangers last season, but entering a year in which he figures to be the centerpiece of the Rangers offense (again), Rick Nash admitted to feeling uncomfortable when he returned from a concussion last season. [NY Post]

Dan Boyle also got his first real go in a Rangers jersey in that tilt against New Jersey. According to the 15-year veteran, Madison Square Garden has always been his favorite building. [NY Post]

Training camp? Intraquad game? The real evaluation began on Monday night. [Blueshirt Banter]
