Pregame: New York Riveters at Boston Pride

The New York Riveters will face a tough test in their first regular season game of the 2016-17 season: the defending Isobel Cup Champion Boston Pride.

The Riveters are billed as the road team for tonight’s season opener, but the game is being played in Buffalo, New York. The Pride opened their season against the Beauts last night, so the Riveters should have some fresher legs.

Riveters’ Roster:

Forwards

Kessel, Rafter, Ketchum, Russo, D’Oench, Packer, Gruschow, Fritz-Ward, Weber

Defenders

Fratkin, Picard, Johnston, Dosdall, Burke, McMillen

Goaltenders

Sojung Shin | Katie Fitzgerald

The Riveters practice squad players are Taylor Holze, Gabie Figueroa, Julia “Cheeky” Herr, and Rebecca Morse.

Amanda Kessel, Sojung Shin, Miye D’Oench, Tatiana Rafter, and Rebecca Russo were among the standouts in the Riveters’ two preseason games against Team Russia. Interestingly enough, all five of the aforementioned women are new to the team.

Something to keep an eye on is how New York native D’Oench plays against the team that drafted her. D’Oench was acquired in the blockbuster Alex Carpenter trade over the offseason with Boston. She will have a big role in the Riveters’ offense this season.

It’s no secret that the Pride’s roster is saturated with talent. Boston has five skaters on the USWNT in the upcoming Four Nations Cup (including Carpenter). Kessel will be the only Riveter appearing on the roster for the tournament. Knight missed yesterday’s game against the Beauts. Expect her to be out of the lineup tonight as well.

Tonight’s game should give us a better understanding of just how much better the new and improved Riveters are. There is a new face of the franchise. There are 11 new players under contract. This team was handpicked by Chad Wiseman to play his systems and to win hockey games. It’s time so see what they can do.

Give our Riveters Season Preview a read while you wait for puck drop. You can watch tonight’s game on the NWHL’s YouTube page. There will be a free live stream of the action there.

The Riveters’ second season begins at 7:30pm tonight.
