Cody Eakin has been handed a four game suspension for charging Henrik Lundqvist during Thursday night’s game in Dallas.
From the NHL’s official press release:
Dallas Stars forward Cody Eakin has been suspended for four games, without pay, for charging New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist during NHL Game No. 452 in Dallas on Thursday, Dec. 15, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.
The incident occurred at 9:19 of the first period. Eakin was assessed a major penalty for charging and a game misconduct.
Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Eakin will forfeit $85,555.56. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
Here is the Department of Player Safety’s video explanation of Eakin’s suspension.
The NHL rule in question is 42.1. Clearly, Eakin did not do enough to avoid contact and he treated Lundqvist as fair game on this play.
