The NWHL announced this afternoon that Chad Wiseman has been named the GM of the Riveters, a role previously held by Dani Rylan. Rylan will maintain her primary position as commissioner of the NWHL.
The press release focused on Wiseman's promotion, causing many to miss the fine print -- or rather, the italics -- stating that Wiseman would also continue to serve as head coach for the team. The new dual role surprised both fans and media, many of whom had wondered if, due to the Riveters' last place finish, he would be returning at all.
The announcement comes at a time when leadership positions in the still-new league have been in considerable flux. Earlier this week, the Buffalo Beauts announced that, in spite of their Cup-final finish, neither their GM nor one of their head coaches would be returning next season. The Connecticut Whale had a chaotic first season, with multiple turnovers behind the bench and in the front office; Lisa Giovanelli Zuba will be their new GM as well as assistant coach. Hayley Moore will be back as GM for the Isobel Cup champions, the Boston Pride; they await confirmation of the return of coach Bobby Jay.
With most of the league's decision making (and reasoning) unfolding behind closed doors, it's not always clear what's happening, and why. Hopefully, Wiseman's new role won't detract from his responsibility to reorganize and motivate a talented but so far unsuccessful team.
