The second NWHL regular season comes to a close today with two must-see games on the schedule. The Connecticut Whale host the Buffalo Beauts at 3:00 PM in a game with major playoff consequences. The winner will travel to Newark next Friday to play the Riveters, while the loser heads to Boston to face the Pride.

Newark also hosts an important game today. The Boston Pride are hoping to complete the perfect season with a win over the New York Riveters. The two clubs faced off last week and it appeared that New York was going to serve Boston their first loss of the season. However, the resilient and talented Pride rallied for a third period comeback to win the game 4-3 at home.

The Riveters have fallen just short of succeeding in their role of spoiler for the Pride on several occasions now, but this week they have some unexpected extra help.

Rookie defenseman and 2016 #1 overall draft pick Kelsey Koelzer is expected to make her NWHL debut today for New York. Her addition to the team was a surprise at this point in the season, but it will almost certainly be a boon given her talent. Koelzer may be the final piece that the Riveters need to dethrone the Pride.

The Boston Pride know that they cannot take New York lightly. The Riveters are the only team to truly challenge the reigning Isobel Cup champions this season. A perfect record to end the regular season would be a remarkable achievement for Boston, one that they will surely fight to the final buzzer for.

Players to Watch

New York Riveters

Kelsey Koelzer

The #1 pick of last year’s NWHL draft is set to lace up the skates for the first time today. Her debut was unforeseen as of two weeks ago, but her arrival in Newark has the potential to make a big splash. Koelzer is a dynamic defender who possesses phenomenal stick skills and a knack for making the big play. If she can contribute to a New York win over Boston in her debut, she may quickly take over the hearts of fans.

Boston Pride

Alex Carpenter

The #1 overall pick of the 2015 NWHL draft will also be playing today, but for the Boston Pride. Alex Carpenter has lit it up in her first season, racking up 28 points (9 G, 19 A) in 16 games played. The rookie phenom has a chance to cap off the regular season with 10+ goals and 20+ assists at the conclusion of today’s game. Accomplishing this feat in a win against the team that drafted her would be icing on the cake.

Final Thoughts

Honestly, if you are not already convinced that this game is going to be a thriller than I do not know what else can be done for you. A win for New York would be just what the doctor ordered heading into the playoffs. Boston would love to add the title of perfect record to their résumés as reigning champions.

It’s a good day for hockey. Let’s drop the puck.
