Today the New York Rangers announced the addition of Steve Konowalchuk as a scout for the organization. Konowalchuk was on the coaching staff of the Anaheim Ducks last season, and appeared nearly 800 games with the Washington Capitals and the Colorado Avalanche during his playing career.
His primary focus will be scouting the WHL, where he was recently the head coach of the Seattle Thunderbirds. Konowalchuk held that position for six seasons before making the jump to coach at the NHL level with the Ducks. He is one of 19 scouts currently listed on the Rangers’ site.
Today the Rangers also announced the date for Vic Hadfield Night. The ceremony will take place on Dec. 2, before the Rangers play the visiting Winnipeg Jets. Hadfield, of course, will be the second Ranger to watch number 11 be raised to the rafters of Madison Square Garden. The first, Mark Messier, was similarly honored on Jan. 12, 2006.
Hadfield played 13 NHL seasons with the Rangers and three seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He finished his NHL career with 712 points in 1002 games. He turns 78 in October.
