Rangers vs Coyotes: Christian Dvorak’s Overtime Winner Downs Rangers 3-2

The New York Rangers dropped their fifth straight game this evening as they were defeated 3-2 in overtime by the Arizona Coyotes. The Rangers started the game with no energy and were dominated throughout the first 20 minutes. A second period surge brought the Rangers back even once again, but Christian Dvorak ended all hope in overtime with his fourth goal of the season.

Here is tonight’s goal breakdown.

1st Period
Lawson Crouse (2) - Christian Fischer (1) & Carl Soderberg (4) - 13:06 1st Period

The Rangers were absolutely dominated during the first period as the Coyotes out-shot them to the tune of 21-4. With the Rangers barely having any sort of effective zone time, the Coyotes just kept firing shots on net and were eventually rewarded. A simple dump in by Carl Soderberg turned into a goal against for the Rangers after Christian Fischer quickly shoveled a shot on goal.

Brendan Lemieux was somehow the only player remotely close to the front of the net, and was unable to make a play on Lawson Crouse cutting through the slot. Crouse located the loose puck and just barely slipped it by Alexandar Georgiev’s right leg to make it a 1-0 game.

2nd Period
Tony DeAngelo (2) - Brendan Lemieux (1) & Pavel Buchnevich (4) - 5:04 2nd Period

After a miserable first period, the Rangers finally found their legs and tied up the game on their seventh shot on goal. Pavel Bucnevich created a 2-on-1 rush back the other way with a great defensive play, and found Brendan Lemieux cutting to the net.

Lemieux’s initial shot was stopped with a great pad save by Darcy Kuemper, but it created a huge rebound at the top of the crease. Tony DeAngelo, who was trailing the play, immediately jumped on the loose puck and tapped it home to make it a 1-1 game.

Alex Goligoski (1) PPG - Jacob Chychrun (1) & Nick Schmaltz (6) - 13:46 2nd Period

Nearly eight minutes later, the Rangers got into some penalty trouble once again and gave Arizona a big opportunity on the power play. Just as the penalty was set to expire, Alex Goligoski’s booming slap shot found its way through traffic and beat Alexandar Georgiev on the blocker side. Georgiev never really stood a chance on the goal as he never even caught a glimpse of the puck as it came in on net.

Tony DeAngelo (3) PPG - Ryan Strome (4) & Kaapo Kakko (1) - 18:00 2nd Period

With a little under five minutes remaining in the period, the Rangers finally had their chance to go to work on the power play, and they took full advantage. Tony DeAngelo picked up his second goal of the night after slipping into open ice, and tapping home a beautiful cross-ice pass from Ryan Strome. Kaapo Kakko picked up his first career assist on the goal as well, and the Rangers were back even once again.

3rd Period

No goals scored.

Overtime

Christian Dvorak (4) - Alex Goligoski (5) & Clayton Keller (7) - 1:04 Overtime

The Rangers were able to snag a point in this game, but unfortunately, overtime lasted a little over a minute before Arizona scored the game winner. The opening line for the Rangers was caught out the entire minute as the Coyotes never gave up possession, and Christian Dvorak sniped home the game winning goal.

The Rangers have now dropped their fifth straight game after opening the season with two wins, and fall to 2-4-1 on the season. Following tonight’s rough loss, the Rangers will have a scheduled off day tomorrow before returning to action on Thursday night against the Buffalo Sabres.
