Open Game Thread: New York Rangers vs Philadelphia Flyers

After dropping the both games of their home-and-home set with the Devils, the Rangers are back in action tonight. A trip to the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia means a matchup with Alain Vigneault’s Flyers is on the docket.

After being fired by the Rangers after the 2017-18 season, Vigneault spent the 2018-19 campaign out of hockey, opting to wait and pick a job of his choosing rather than jumping back into the fray. He joins a Flyers team that’s undergone a radical makeover since April, seeing the likes of Matt Niskanen, Justin Braun, and former Ranger Kevin Hayes join his new team.

The Rangers’ lineup is as follows:

Player to Watch: Igor Shesterkin

After having a strong pre-season debut on Wednesday, Shesterkin is set to play the entirety of tonight’s game. Although he entered camp facing an uphill battle to make the team immediately, another strong performance could help Shesterkin start the season on Broadway. As a higher ceiling option compared to Alexandar Georgiev, the sooner Shesterkin arrives in the NHL the better. While the two European netminders are likely to shuttle back and forth from Hartford throughout the season, it’d be in the Blueshirts’ best interest to prioritize Shesterkin’s development.

Enjoy the game!
