Rangers vs Jets: Rangers Start Road Trip By Knocking Off Winnipeg 4-1

The New York Rangers started off their road trip in style as they went into a hostile environment in Winnipeg, and came away with a 4-1 victory. David Quinn continues to ride the hot hand in Igor Shesterkin, and the 24-year old continues to deliver on a nightly basis picking up his fourth straight win tonight.

1st Period

Chris Kreider (21) - Pavel Buchnevich (21) - 19:25 1st Period

The Rangers had some early jump in this game, and they were able to come away with the first goal of the game late in the first period. Chris Kreider was able to use his speed to create separation after chasing down a flip pass from Pavel Buchnevich, and burned Sami Niku entering the zone. Kreider used his big frame to bounce off of the defender and slipped the puck around Connor Hellebuyck to give New York a 1-0 lead.

2nd Period

Chris Kreider (22) PPG - Ryan Strome (34) & Mika Zibanejad (26) - 7:30 2nd Period

Chris Kreider eventually picked up his second goal of the evening on the power play, and the Rangers jumped out to a 2-0 lead just under halfway through the middle frame. Just prior to the goal, Connor Hellebuyck made a ridiculous pad save on Brady Skjei, but the rebound kicked right out to the top of the crease. Chris Kreider was stationed perfectly in his office and tapped home the loose puck before the goaltender was able to react.

3rd Period

Ryan Strome (13) - Jesper Fast (16) & Artemiy Panarin (46) - 0:53 3rd Period

With the Rangers holding onto a two-goal lead heading into the third period, it was expected that Winnipeg was going to come out with early pressure. However, the Rangers flipped the script and appeared to stun the Jets with an early goal of their own. Artemiy Panarin created the change with a great centering pass, but it was Ryan Strome who finished off the play with a quick spinning shot that fooled the Jetsโ€™ goaltender.

Mika Zibanejad (23) - Pavel Buchnevich (22) - 1:28 3rd Period

Just as the Jets were collecting themselves after the previous goal, the Rangers stormed right back down the ice and took a commanding 4-0 lead in this game. Mika Zibanejad picked up his 23rd goal of the season and slamming home a beautiful centering feed from Pavel Buchnevich. Buchnevich did an excellent job of staying with the play after forcing the initial turnover, and capped off the play with a great pass to Zibanejad.

Nikolaj Ehlers (20) - Sami Niku (5) & Josh Morrissey (23) - 4:35 3rd Period

Winnipeg eventually ended their scoreless drought at the 4:35 mark of the third period as Nikolaj Ehlers snapped a shot through traffic. A funny little quirk about tonightโ€™s game was that neither Igor Shesterkin nor Henrik Lundqvist would have received a shutout after the two swapped places when Shesterkin was summoned to the quiet room. Had the Jets not scored a goal, Henrik Lundqvist would have been credited with the win being he was the active goaltender when the Rangers took the first lead of the game.

The Rangers have now picked up two straight wins and are clearly playing with some crazy confidence in front of Igor Shesterkin. New York will continue their road trip as they move on to Minnesota for a meeting with the Minnesota Wild on Thursday evening.
