Game #53: Washington Capitals vs New York Rangers Open Thread

The Rangers will kick off their final homestand of the 2020-21 season tonight, and they’ll do so against their old playoff nemesis, the Washington Capitals. While the theme of the season has generally been New York’s success against divisional bottom feeders being offset by their struggles against the playoff teams, the Capitals have been an exception to the rule. David Quinn’s squad currently holds a 4-2-0 record in the season series, and has outscored Washington by a 21-13 margin.

In spite of that success, the Blueshirts’ playoff hopes could officially end tonight. A loss of any kind will eliminate the Rangers, and should Boston earn at least one point in their game against New Jersey, happening at the same time as this one, that would also knock the Rangers out of the playoff chase.

Player to Watch: Tarmo Reunanen

After getting recalled alongside Morgan Barron in advance of Saturday night’s contest, Reunanen skated in his second NHL contest, and will skate in his third tonight. With the logjam of players currently building on the left side of New York’s defense corps, Reunanen could end up as one of the odd men out when the Rangers are back in action next season. With only four games remaining, Reunanen will need to showcase his stuff in order to keep himself in the conversation for a roster spot next season. Look for a strong effort out of him.

Enjoy the game!
