With training camp about to kick off, now’s a good time to take a look at the New York Rangers organizational depth from top to bottom following all of the off-season business. For the most part, there aren’t a ton of question marks regarding how this team is going to shape up come opening night. Of the 22 or 23 names that will be announced at the home opener, there’s only about two or three roster spots that are truly up for grabs: the seventh defenseman, the extra forward, and which young forward makes the team while the others spend time in Hartford for some more seasoning.

First off, let’s take a rough look at the depth charts. Worth noting that this will only include players under contract (or tryout) with the New York Rangers:

Forwards

Cuylle - Miller - Zibanejad
Panarin - Trocheck - Lafrenière
Othmann - Parssinen - Raddysh
Edström - Carrick - Rempe
Berard - Brodzinski - Perreault
Blidh - Dowling - Fix-Wolansky
Sykora - Brisson - Sheary*
Roobroeck - Laba - Chmelar
McConnell-Barker - Terrance - Vaisanen

Defense

Gavrikov - Fox
Schneider - Borgen
Soucy - Vaakanainen
Robertson - Morrow
Mackey - Fitzgerald
Scanlin - Pouliot
Dorrington - Sustr*

Goaltending

Shesterkin - Quick - Garand - Boyko - Ollas - Tung

*Professional Tryout

Essentially, and this might sound fairly obvious, but the full roster can be broken up into three tiers:

  • Tier 1, who are the players who are a lock to make the team out of camp
  • Tier 2, who are the players on the fringe who either have a job to lose or earn
  • Tier 3, who are the players who have little-to-no chance to make the jump to the NHL and are expected to spend the season in Hartford

With that, let’s break it down:
