Carson Soucy Placed on IR with Upper-Body Injury, Connor Mackey Recalled from Hartford
The Rangers lose Carson Soucy to injured reserve after a scary collision in Pittsburgh, recalling Connor Mackey from Hartford amid a tight cap crunch.

The New York Rangers have placed defenseman Carson Soucy on the injured reserve list with an upper-body injury he sustained in their Oct. 11 game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Soucy was upended defending Penguins forward Rickard Rakell in the second period, sending him head-first into the boards. Soucy did not return to the game.

With Soucy out, the Rangers have recalled defenseman Connor Mackey from the Hartford Wolf Pack. Mackey has appeared in three games for the Rangers over the last two seasons, picking up no points and two five minute fighting majors in those games.
Why Mackey and not defenseman Scott Morrow?
The Rangers currently have only $846,692 in available salary cap space, according to PuckPedia. With that financial limitation, they Rangers can fit Mackey's $775,000 cap hit, but not Morrow cap hit of $916,667.
The Rangers have been carrying 23 players on their active roster, including two extra forwards—Juuso Parssinen and Jonny Brodzinski—and one extra defenseman in Matthew Robertson. With Vincent Trocheck already out week-to-week with an upper body injury, they'll be unable to add much in the way of salary without placing either Soucy or Trocheck on LTIR to get additional cap relief.
The Rangers are back in action tonight at Madison Square Garden against the Washington Capitals, so we'll see soon how the reformed defense without Soucy in the lineup will look.
