Chris Kreider is off to a rarely-seen start to the season
Multiple points in every game so far? That doesn’t just happen.
Chris Kreider is having a good season so far.
Okay, so that season is only three games old - but still, when you’ve got six points, and have scored two of them in each game, you’re gonna have a good time.
A time so good, in fact, that only two Rangers have ever had it in the past. Via Elias Sports Bureau, Inc.:
He's the third player in Rangers history to record at least two points in each of the team's first three games of a season, joining Mike McEwen (1978-79) and Bernie Nicholls (1990-91).
McEwen’s season ended up seeing him score 20 goals and 58 points, while Nicholls got 25 goals and 73 points. Of course, those were both different eras of hockey from today, but Kreider’s career highs in his three seasons of work so far are 21 goals and 46 points, so if he’s able to replicate any of their seasons, that’d be awesome.
That’s not just it, though. Having multiple points through the season’s first three games isn’t just something unique to the Rangers: it’s unique throughout the league. Again, from Elias:
Kreider is the first NHL player to produce at least one goal and one assist in each of his team's first three games of a season since Alex Ovechkin and Anze Kopitar both did that to begin the 2009-10 campaign.
Ovechkin and Kopitar are two nice names to have something in common with, I suppose. Ovechkin was held pointless in his fourth game of that season, while Kopitar got just one point in his. So if Kreider can keep this up, he has the chance to push this hot start even further than others have gone.
