Game Notes: Rangers vs. Flyers Rookie Camp Game 2

The New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers were back at it in Allentown, Penn. for Game 2 of their yearly rookie camp series.

• There were a couple of serious changes to the lineup for the Rangers. Cole Beaudoin, Alberts Smits, and Bryce McConnell-Barker were all out, with Dayne Beuker, Zakary Karpa, and Zeb Lindgren suiting up in their place.

• Dylan Roobroeck moved up to the top line and 2026 third round pick Tomas Chrenko moved up to the second line. Spencer Bowes, who along with Chrenko looked good last night, also moved up from the fourth to third line.
• Most of everything else stayed the same, with Danaii Shaiikov getting the start in net the game.
• It was a mainly uneventful but good-paced opening period. Shaiikov looked good in the early stages of this one, coming up with some big saves including one on a partial breakaway.
• The Rangers only real scoring chance came on a nice effort from Adam Sykora that created a shot for Nathan Aspinall that was turned away.

• The Flyers took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission as a bad neutral zone breakdown resulted in an odd man rush led by Oliver Bonk. He set up Denver Barkey, who pulled off a nice forehand-backhand move to beat Shaiikov.
• Two minutes into the second period, Evan Passmore took the first penalty of the night, sending Philadelphia to the power play. The Flyers controlled play but the Rangers were able to hold them off for the entirety of the two minute advantage.
• The Rangers did not have a ton of chances through the first half of the period but a give and go from Zakary Karpa sent Jacob Battaglia on a breakaway from in close. He wouldn't score, but it was their best chance up to that point.

• With eight and a half minutes to go in the second, Noah Powell, who had been looking for a dance partner all weekend, was challenged by Jackson Dorrington for the first fight of the night.

• About a minute later, with some momentum from the fight, a tremendous forecheck from Tomas Chrenko forced a Philadelphia turnover that led to the Rangers first goal of the game. It was a nice passing play that started with Chrenko, who found Sykora, who found Liam Greentree for a one-timer to make it 1-1.

• Things were looking good for the Rangers until the final seconds of the period. Porter Martone, who was dominating play all night, set up a shot for Spencer Gill that created a fortunate bounce for Brek Liske which made it 2-1 with less than five seconds to go.
• The start of the third period was looking quite similar to the first, as there was better pace than game one but the Flyers still had the edge.
• Shaiikov continued to impress, shutting down a 2-on-1 chance for the Flyers early in the third.
• Battaglia had a great steal in the offensive zone with about twelve minutes to go but sent the pass just ahead of Dayne Beuker who was breaking toward the net.
• Moments later, the Flyers were called for an interference penalty, and as the whistle blew Riley Thompson gave Spencer Bowes an extra shove into the boards. This drew a crowd as Passmore got tangled up with K.J. Sauer, and Bowes with Spencer Gill. All four were assessed matching penalties as Riley Steen's interference call gave the Rangers a power play.
• It was Aspinall, Roobroeck, Anderson, Greentree, and Trudeau that made up the top power play unit for the Rangers here, but it wouldn't be a full showing. The teams would skate 4-v-4 as the Rangers were called for a penalty of their own about a minute and a half later.
• Oliver Bonk had a great chance with a one timer that was taken away by the glove of Shaiikov for another stellar save.

• With three and a half to go, Beauker led a 2-on-1 for the Rangers but was turned away as he opted for the shot. Worth noting, he has looked solid for an unsigned camp invite.
• The future Rangers did their best current Rangers impression as Shaiikov was pulled with just over two minutes to go and almost immediately gave up an empty netter. Alex Ciernak sent one all the way from the Flyers end of the ice to make it a 3-1 game.
• They would try again, and fail again, as Porter Martone picked up the second empty netter to make it 4-1. He skated Roobroeck into the boards on the way back to the benches which led into another half-spirited scrum mainly consisting of Greentree holding onto the collar of another Flyers prospect.

• That would do it, as the Rangers drop Game 2 by a score of 4-1 with the Flyers sweeping the weekend series. Next up, training camp.
