MTPS: Five Things I Think I Think Heading Into The Deadline

The trade deadline is here, and chaos is coming. From goalie desperation in Edmonton to what a Trocheck deal could signal about Igor Shesterkin, here’s what I think I think before the madness begins.

Well, it's coming.

You guys are so childish. OK, fine, let me rephrase: The trade deadline is almost here. Over the next few days we're going to see a lot of good moves, bad moves, and moves that make us say "great googily moogily."

Here are a few things I think that I think:

1) The Edmonton Oilers Should Acquire Another Goalie

Picture it: The 2026 Milan Olympics, Connor McDavid is sitting in his locker, a silver medal in one hand and the headless corpse of an emotional support stuffy in the other. The man has played in the Stanley Cup Final for two straight years and the Olympic Gold Medal game and lost all three because his team was out-goalied. Earlier this year, Edmonton moved on from Stuart Skinner for the equally disappointing, but significantly more expensive, Tristan Jarry. How's that going?

Soooo ... yeah.

Would it shock anyone—anyone at all—if an irate McDavid storms into the office of Edmonton's general manager Stan Bowman and says, "Get me a real fucking goalie!!!"

There have been rumors of goalies like Jordan Binnington and Jesper Wallstedt, and maybe even Sergei Bobrovsky, being on the move, as well as some earlier suggestions that teams were trying to convince Marc-Andre Fleury to come out of retirement. Edmonton has no cap space and even fewer trade assets, and don't seem to think there's a problem here. So, we'll see how this goes. But if the plan is to go into the playoffs with Tristan Jarry and Connor Ingram, then Connor McDavid may want to pick up another bridesmaid's dress.
