New York Rangers Announce Hiring of Ryan Martin

Ryan Martin joins the team as an Assistant General Manager who will oversee the Hartford Wolf Pack

The New York Rangers formally announced the hiring of Ryan Martin as Assistant General Manager, and General Manager of the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Previously the hiring had been reported by Larry Brooks, but unannounced by the team.

The Rangers’ release on Ryan highlights that he spent 16 with the Detroit Red Wings, including 11 as an AGM with 8 of those years including oversight of the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL. He will primarily be responsible for the Pack, but he will also serve an important role to the Rangers in the front office.

Per the release:

In his most recent role with the Red Wings, Martin was primarily responsible for collective bargaining agreement administration and compliance, salary cap management, player contract research and analysis, and salary arbitration preparation. He was also involved extensively in all facets of player contract negotiations, strategic planning, and player evaluations at both the professional and amateur levels.

Per the Red Wings’ website, Martin graduated from Trinity College in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Legal Studies. He went on to earn a law degree from the University of Denver, College of Law in 1997 and an LL.M. in taxation from the University of Denver, College of Law in 1998.

He also worked with KO Sports, Inc from 1999 to 2003, which is an agency group that was founded by Kurt Overhardt.

In the coming years the team will need a cap expert of sorts to help navigate the potential rocky waters that come with having a number of talented young players on first and second contracts. In that regard Martin feels like a perfect fit for the organization given his experience and academic background.

He also will be an important asset for the Wolf Pack as they continue to become a better overall development environment. The Red Wings are known for taking their time in developing players and utilizing Grand Rapids extensively, and the AHL affiliate has had a decent amount of success including two Calder Cups in 2012-13, and 2016-17.

Martin seemingly checks a lot of boxes, and appears to be a great overall hire for the Rangers.
