New York Rangers February Prospect Pipeline Scouting Report
Liam Greentree is making his presence felt since arriving in the Panarin trade, while the Rangers’ broader prospect pool continues to offer plenty of intrigue—and questions.
Welcome to the February edition of the Prospect Pipeline Scouting Report series. This month, we’re going to focus on the player everyone is interested to know more about: Liam Greentree. Additionally, we’ll check in on two of the Rangers’ more depth prospects in Evan Passmore and Samuel Jung.
But first, let’s quickly check in on the Rangers’ prospect pool at large.
Brody Lamb: Surely you’ve already seen this insane between-the-legs goal from the University of Minnesota. While the goal didn’t come from Lamb, he did set Brodie Ziemer up for it with the primary assist. Lamb is up to 14 goals and 16 assists for 30 points on the season, one point shy of a point-per-game pace.
Nathan Aspinall: Currently second in the OHL in points, Aspinall is now up to 79 points in 55 games with the Flint Firebirds. Considering how badly Hartford has struggled this year and the fact that the Rangers are going to be sellers at the trade deadline, the Rangers organization is surely looking forward to getting Aspinall back to Hartford.
Malcolm Spence: Spence has added three more assists to his season point total, as he now has 17 points in 32 games at the University of Michigan. While these aren't necessarily the numbers we hoped to see from Spence, he's still gaining valuable experience in his freshman year and could be in for a big jump next season.
Raoul Boilard: Since being traded to the Cape Breton Eagles, Boilard is up to 10 points in 19 games making his season total 33 in 52 games in the QMJHL. The Rangers lack depth, as we know, so they might as well consider signing him to an entry-level contract and getting him to Hartford sooner rather than later. But I'm not convinced he's going to be an impact player at any level any time soon.
Ty Henricks: Henricks continues to be a name of interest, now up to 22 points (9 goals, 13 assists) in 32 games played.
EJ Emery: Now with eight points on the season, Emery has three goals and five assists in his sophomore season.
Mikkel Eriksen: Eriksen remains with Farjestad BK's big club having notched 44 points in 25 games with the junior team. While he's pointless in 15 games in the SHL, he's gaining valuable experience playing in a men's league which is especially impressive considering he's only 18 years old.
Rasmus Larsson: There's been some progress for Larsson as he collected his first collegiate goal for Robert Morris on Feb. 14. It was a simple shot from the point found its way to the back of the net, giving him a goal and an assist in 16 games at RMU.
Drew Fortescue: Having played in five more games, Fortescue has officially surpassed his career high as he now has 12 points split across four goals and eight assists.
Rico Gredig: What a difference a month makes. When I wrote about Gredig last month I thought maybe there could be something with him. Since then, he has been assigned to EHC Arosa for the rest of the season. To be clear, I'm no expert on professional hockey in Switzerland—but it has to be a demotion compared to HC Davos. In two games with his new team, Gredig picked up an assist as well as 29 penalty minutes and a one game suspension for "kicking".
Artem Gonchar: Gonchar continues to be a pleasant surprise as he's up to 42 points in 55 games with the Sudbury Wolves. In terms of offense, he might already be the Rangers top prospect on the back end—partially by default.
Zeb Lindgren: Lindgren has played in four games since we covered him last month, during which he picked up one more assists for a season point total of 15.
Liam Greentree - Right Wing, Windsor, Spitfires, OHL
In case you missed it, I did an initial deep dive on Liam Greentree shortly after he was acquired by the Rangers. Since that story was written, Greentree has continued to be a key player in the OHL as he has six points in his last five games with the Windsor Spitfires.
