New York Rangers News: Darroll Powe and Arron Asham Placed On Waivers
In an interesting turn of events, the New York Rangers have placed Arron Asham and Darroll Powe on waivers at noon.
With just under 24 hours until the free agency madness is set to commence, Glen Sather has started to make some moves in order to free up some cap space. According to Andrew Gross of The Record, the New York Rangers have placed both Arron Asham and Darroll Powe on regular waivers at noon today. This now gives other teams an opportunity to swipe them off the market, and take them off of the Rangers hands.
There is also the possibility that they are sent down the AHL, which would still have the Rangers on the hook for their cap hit, but at a very minimum rate. With the buried rule, it would be Powe and Asham's NHL salary minus the minimum league salary ($550,000 + $375,000). So in the event that they are retained and sent down, the Rangers would only being paying Asham $75,000 and Powe $141,667. Which, would have the Rangers saving $1,850,000 by the end of all of this.
With both of their cap hits being so small though, there's a pretty good chance that both of them could be claimed. If that does come to fruition, that would give the Rangers an extra two million in cap space, and bring them up to $16 million for this off-season.
The Rangers still have some work to do with their four restricted free agents, as Derek Stepan, Carl Hagelin, Ryan McDonagh, and Mats Zuccarello are still without contracts. Whether Sather will make any further moves to clear cap space is unforeseen at this point, but these next few days will be interesting that's for sure.
