Game #31: Buffalo Sabres vs New York Rangers Open Thread

Following a back-to-back split in Washington over the weekend, the Blueshirts are back in action tonight against the lowly Buffalo Sabres. Mired in one of their worst slumps in franchise history, Buffalo has posted a 2-16-2 record dating back to January 31st, and that record is an even more paltry 0-14-1 in games against teams aside from the 7th place New Jersey Devils. It’s been nearly a month since the team won a game, with their February 23rd victory over New Jersey marking their most recent victory.

Teams around the league are already circling Buffalo’s corpse for the few intriguing rental options they have. Taylor Hall is likely to be shipped out sooner rather than later, and former Ranger Eric Staal is another veteran option for teams interested in a buy-low option. The Blueshirts have won two out of the three meetings between these teams thus far, and they’ll look to make it three out of four tonight.

Player to Watch: Alexis Lafreniere

Much has been made of Lafreniere’s struggles to find the score sheet throughout his rookie season. Aside from a four game point streak as February turned to March, the former 1st overall selection has only scored three points in the other 26 games of the season. However, Lafreniere has scored a goal in each of New York’s last two games against Buffalo, with his first career goal serving as the overtime winner back on January 28th. Keep an eye on Lafreniere tonight as he looks to assert himself on the ice.

Enjoy the game!
