Henrik Lundqvist Makes 41 Saves in 3-2 Overtime Victory vs. San Jose Sharks

The New York Rangers defeated the San Jose Sharks, 3-2 in overtime, to pick up their first win of the season and the first in the David Quinn era.

Despite getting out shot 43-27, the Rangers prevailed as Brady Skjei netted the game-winning goal in OT, beating Sharks goaltender Aaron Dell.

Henrik Lundqvist faced 43 shots, stopping 41 in total, and without a doubt gave the Rangers a chance to complete the comeback. The 36-year-old whose rumored demise has been greatly exaggerated is now 1-2-0 on the season with a .942 save percentage and 2.03 goals against average.

1-0 Sharks

Marcus Sorensen (1) - Assists: Brent Burns, Timo Meier

The Rangers earned their first power-play of the game just 3:07 in, but Sharks forward Marcus Sorensen scored a shorthanded goal on a wrist shot, while making Brady Skjei look silly in the process. He looked foolish here, but would redeem himself later on when the game was on the line.

1-1 Rangers

Brett Howden (2) - Assists: Mats Zuccarello, Chris Kreider

The Rangers tied the game up at the 13:52 mark of the first period, as Brett Howden went through the legs for a jaw-dropping behind-the-back goal to beat Dell through the 5-hole. Howden played 17:34 in the game which was the most among Blueshirt centers. He has been playing with more confidence in each game, and has earned the trust of Quinn.

2-1 Sharks

Joonas Donskoi (1) - Assists: Brent Burns, Antti Suomela

A Chris Kreider slapper, saved by Dell, turned into a 3-on-1 for the Sharks as Joonas Donskoi broke the tie 4:59 into the second period. Lundqvist pretty much had no chance on this one.

2-2 Rangers

Brendan Smith (1) - Assists: Pavel Buchnevich, Jesper Fast

After getting outplayed for most of the second period, the Rangers proved some of that resilience Quinn has preached by controlling the puck for much of the third. After an offensive zone faceoff win with just under three minutes to go, Pavel Buchnevich made a nifty backhand pass to Brendan Smith who tied up the game with a one-timer.

It was a huge goal for Smith who has been looking to prove he can be a difference maker for the Rangers, and the player they traded for at the trade deadline in 2017.

3-2 Rangers

Brady Skjei (1): Unassisted

Skjei and Mats Zuccarello looked like they had a 2-on-1 in the 3-on-3 overtime, but Sharks forward Logan Couture hustled back to eliminate the passing lane. Skjei then let go a wrister from the left side of Dell to give the Rangers the victory. The patience of Skjei was impressive as he let Dell back himself into the net providing a lane to roof the puck.

The Rangers will play the second of a three-game home stand at MSG on Saturday afternoon against the Edmonton Oilers at 1 p.m.
