Open Game Thread: 2018 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic
For the first time since 2012, the New York Rangers are set to take the ice and skate in the NHL's marquee game of the regular season as they visit the Buffalo Sabres at Citi Field. Of the twenty player suiting up for New York later today, only five of them have played in an outdoor game as a Ranger, with Rick Nash and Mats Zuccarello suiting up for both of New York's Stadium Series games in 2014, while Henrik Lundqvist, Marc Staal, and Ryan McDonagh skated in those two contests as well as the 2012 Winter Classic in Philadelphia. The Buffalo Sabres are even less experienced playing in the elements, as forward Jason Pominville is the only member of the franchise who'll be suiting up today that skated in the inaugural Winter Classic ten years ago in Orchard Park.
With clear skies, strong winds, and sub-zero temperatures in the forecast throughout the day, today is looking like a great day to enjoy the action from the comfort and warmth of your living room, bedroom, or whatever establishment you frequent when the Rangers are on. Make sure to stay tuned in throughout the first intermission as well, as the world famous Goo Goo Dolls are set to take the stage with a live performance in between the first and second periods.
Player To Watch: After today's action, Vinni Lettieri will have the unique distinction of having played half of his NHL career in the outdoors. Lettieri scored his first NHL goal on Friday against the Detroit Red Wings, so look for Lettieri to continue to establish himself as an NHL-caliber player for the team moving forward.
