Podcast Ombudsman Report for Blueshirt Bandwidth Ep. 81
Charlie cleans up Episode 81: Joe still can't pronounce the podcast's name, and J.T. Miller's "controller disconnected" moments are really more of a trend.
Welcome back to the Blueshirt Bandwidth Podcast Ombudsman Report. Each week, Charlie Vidal will listen to the latest episode of the podcast and correct the record on anything Joe and Eric get wrong. If you aren't already, you can listen and subscribe to the podcast here.
Shootout Performance
During the discussion of New York Rangers legend Marcel Hossa, the shootout excellence of Hossa, Wojtek Wolski, and Mats Zuccarello was mentioned.
The conversion rate on shootouts generally hovers in the low 30 percent region, with a low of 29.4 percent in 2018-19 and a high of 35.8 percent in 2012-13. Hossa, Wolski, and Zuccarello have been better than the league average. Zuccarello has a career 43.5 percent shootout percentage in 92 attempts over the first 16 years of his career, and Wolski converted on 42.3 percent of his 52 attempts in his (relatively) brief eight year career. Marcel Hossa went 4 for 9 (44.4 percent) in his six year career.
Of note, the best Ranger of all time with at least 10 attempts in the shootout is Artemi Panarin, who converted on 53 percent of the 28 attempts that he took with the Rangers:

Note: Hockey-Reference does not track shootout attempts prior to 2007
Joe’s Mispronunciations
While discussing Joe’s making Blueshirt Bandwidth plural, Eric pointed out that that Joe has been calling the podcast "Blushirts Bandwidth" all season. That is, of course, when he isn’t referring to the podcast by the name of the website and/or the former podcast. So, to be fair, “Blueshirts Bandwidth” is closer to the name of the show than “Blushirt Banter" or "Bantering the Blueshirts."
Quick’s Time in NYC
Joe said that it was a shame that the Rangers didn’t win the cup in 2023. Quick was on Vegas’s bench in 2023 (where he won the Cup). Joe is thinking of 2024, which is the only year that Quick was on the Rangers for a playoff run.
2014 Blame
Joe blames the officials and Dustin Brown for the Rangers' 2014 Stanley Cup Final loss, not Jonathan Quick. I blame Dan Girardi for gifting Justin Williams the game winning goal in Game 1. For those who are too young to remember, or have self-medicated enough to forget, this still-frame below showing Dan Girardi with clean possession of the puck in his defensive zone and no pressure on him was taken a mere six seconds before Justin Williams put the puck past Henrik Lundqvist to win Game 1:

J.T. Miller Controller Disconnected
Eric mentioned a moment earlier this season when Miller was coasting towards the play when the puck went into the Rangers' net. I’m surprised that Eric called it a moment, and not a trend. Here is a sample of J.T. Miller spectating as the Rangers were scored on this season, featuring goals by the Vegas Golden Knights, Boston Bruins, and Philadelphia Flyers:

Keep an eye on JT Miller at the blue line.

Completely giving up on the play, skating to the bench.
Gutless, shameful performance by the "no BS" captain. And it's not the first time this season. Anyone remember the Vegas game?

The original “Controller Disconnected” meme dates back to Game 4 of the 2013 Eastern Conference Quarterfinal between the Rangers and Washington Capitals, where Ryan Callahan and Carl Hagelin set up Derek Stepan for the game winning goal while Alex Ovechkin glided back into the zone:
For some reason, the NHL has an official Tumblr page, and the original meme is preserved for posterity there:
Quinn Hughes Play
Joe mentioned the “Quinn Hughes play” and his lackadaisical effort that allowed the Dallas Stars to score a game-sealing empty-net goal because he was trying to draw an icing. Here is Joe’s tweet which quotes a video of the play, as well as Joe's baiting of fans:

Last Year’s Breakup Day
Joe said that last year’s breakup day was a lot more interesting and raw because we didn’t know if we were going to have a coach.
We all knew that we didn’t have a coach by February of last season.
Playoff Overtime Hockey
With the playoffs back, it’s time to refresh the famous Jon Bois tweet:
why watch overtime playoff hockey when you can simply snort cocaine and ride a motorcycle out of a helicopter
