Rangers Acquire Draft Picks in Exchange for D Will Borgen
The Rangers get some draft picks back and open a spot on their blue line by trading Will Borgen.
After a number of significant moves, which included the acquisitions of Sean Durzi and Marcus Pettersson, the New York Rangers have sent defenseman Will Borgen to the Boston Bruins. In exchange, they get some draft capital back in the form of a 2027 second round pick and a conditional 2028 third.
Condition is that 2028 pick will turn into a second-rounder if Boston makes the conference final in either 2026-27 or 2027-28 and Borgen plays in 50% of the team's playoff games. #NYR https://t.co/H5eEat0hHR

Chris Drury quickly signed Borgen to a five-year extension after the Rangers acquired him in the Kaapo Kakko trade at the end of 2024. Drury very well may have been playing chess and not checkers here, considering Borgen with an AAV of $4.1 million was evidently more enticing to other teams than what was available on the open market. In two seasons with the Rangers, Borgen finished with 126 games played, and nine goals and 19 assists for 28 total points.
With Durzi, Pettersson, and several younger defenseman all still in the picture, it made sense for the Rangers to move a defenseman out, and when push came to shove, it makes sense that they would rather it be Borgen than Braden Schneider. All in all, good business for the Rangers, for now. We'll see what the rest of the offseason brings and how trading those future firsts looks a couple of seasons from now.
Either way, thank you for your services, Borgen.
