It’s not much of a surprise that the New York Rangers have announced more roster moves at this point of the preseason. But one of the cuts they made does seem to come at lot earlier than expected.

Today the Rangers announced that Brennan Othmann, along with Dylan Roobroeck, Bryce McConnel-Barker, Carey Terrance, Blake Hillman, Dylan Garand, and Talyn Boyko have been assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Additionally, Brendan Brisson and Connor Mackey have been placed on waivers and will also report to Hartford in the event they clear. Brendan Scanlin, who is also dealing with an injury, was also assigned to Hartford to continue his conditioning stint.

I’ve mentioned this in previous stories, and the guys have talked about it on previous podcast episodes, but Brennan Othmann had every chance to earn an opening night roster spot this season. From an asset management point of view, it made all the sense in the world for him to start the season in the NHL where he would hopefully take the next step in his career. From that first game of training camp, however, Othmann struggled noticeably. He whiffed on pucks, he fumbled passes, and it just wasn’t clicking for him the way it did for a number of the Rangers’ young forwards. Gabe Perreault and Noah Laba both outplayed him, and Brett Berard and Conor Sheary all turned heads ,which unfortunately left Othmann as the odd man out.

As for the rest of the names, none of them come as much of a surprise. Dylan Roobroeck had some nice games but is still a ways away from making the jump to the NHL. Dylan Garand got a little more NHL experience under his belt but needs to prepare to be Hartford’s clear number one goaltender for a full season ahead before we begin to discuss him succeeding Jonathan Quick as Igor Shesterkin's backup. Carey Terrance had a nice first game at the NHL level last night but will get ready for his first full season of professional hockey. Mackey and Brisson gave it a nice effort but were longshots to make the team out of camp as well.

The Rangers roster now sits at 27 names. The Rangers will have at least four, if not five, more roster cuts to make before opening night which is one week from today.
