Rangers invite Tarmo Reunanen to camp

The Finnish defender will be joining the Rangers imminently

New York Rangers defensive prospect Tarmo Reunanen has been invited to the team’s training camp, per HPK, his Liiga team.

We wish Tarmo success in the camp and thank him for the short loan period, during which we received the necessary confirmation for our defense. If necessary, Tarmo will return to our team if necessary, comments HPK’s Sports Director Mika Toivola.

Reunanen, 22, was the Rangers’ 4th round pick (98th overall) in the 2016 Draft. He’s a 6-foot tall defenseman with a left-handed shot, making his natural side the left side. Needless to say, there’s been a lot of talk about the Rangers' depth, or lack thereof, on the left side. Having Reunanen in camp adds even more competition in what is shaping up to be one of the most important battles of camp.

Reunanen has 50 career points (12 goals, 38 assists) in 158 games in Liiga. He has never played in North America, so there will be an adjustment period for him. Blueshirt Banter’s Adam Herman recently ranked the Finnish blueliner as New York’s 22nd-best player under the age of 24. It will be an uphill battle for Reunanen to make the roster out of camp and, given his age, one has to wonder how much longer the window to his NHL future can remain open. With that being said, anything is possible.

It’s now up to Reunanen to impress the Rangers’ coaching staff and front office.
