Rangers Re-sign Chris Summers

One-year, $600k for the other defenseman that came over in the Yandle trade.

So... who saw this coming?

The Rangers have re-signed defenseman Chris Summers who played the majority of the 2015-16 season with the Hartford Wolf Pack. Summers skated in just three games with the Rangers. The 28 year old defenseman came over in the big Keith Yandle trade and would have been a UFA on July 1st.

Summers has a reputation as a positive locker room presence and is a fine option as a veteran deep on the blue line's depth chart. The former Coyote will be returning to Hartford next season where he will resume his role as a mentor on and off the ice for the Rangers’ prospects.

Summers’ contract will have almost no impact whatsoever on the other moves that the Rangers will be making before or after July 1st when the free agency market opens. There may be more pressing contracts that needed to be addressed, but there need to be bodies in the AHL too.

It may not have been the signing (or re-signing) that we expected, but it does show some signs of life from the Rangers’ front office before the NHL Draft takes place on June 24th in Buffalo.
