Rangers Recall Brennan Othmann from Hartford

Brennan Othmann is back with the big club, but it remains to be seen whether this is his real shot or just a short-term insurance call-up.

Rangers Recall Brennan Othmann from Hartford

The trade will have to wait, as the New York Rangers have recalled Brennan Othmann from the Hartford Wolf Pack.

The Hartford Wolfpack have played four games this season, Othmann has registered one assist in those four games.

As the New York Post's Mollie Walker notes, the recall of Othmann probably speaks more about the potential availability of Matt Rempe than it does about Othmann. Rempe left last night's game after a brutal bout with former Ranger (and Book of Mormon enthusiast) Ryan Reaves.

“He’s being evaluated right now for an upper-body injury,” head coach Mike Sullivan said afterward. I don't like to speculate about injuries but "upper body injury" is usually NHL-speak for "concussion" which would stand to reason after Reaves used Rempe's chin as a speed bag.

How (or if) Othmann will be used is an open question. Could Othmann move into the top six? Sure. Could Othmann simply take Rempe's spot on the fourth line? Sure. It's also entirely possible that the coach will slot Jonny Brodzinski into Rempe's spot on the fourth line and Othmann will sit in the press box.

After last night's game I don't think an injection of youth into the lineup is a bad thing. The biggest question is: If Othmann gets a chance, will he take advantage of it like Matthew Robertson has, or will he squander it and cement his emerging status as yet another disappointing draft pick for the Rangers?

We will all find out together.
