Rangers Recall Garand, Place Korpisalo On IR
After much debate, an injury to Joonas Korpisalo has Dylan Garand in the backup role with the Rangers.
Not even one full week into the 2026-27 season, the New York Rangers already have an injury to factor into their roster decisions. Joonas Korpisalo has been placed on injured reserve, and in a corresponding move, Dylan Garand rejoins the NHL roster. Korpisalo is considered week-to-week with what is being labeled a lower-body injury.
The #NYR have placed G Joonas Korpisalo on injured reserve and recalled G Dylan Garand from AHL Hartford. Korpisalo is thought to be week-to-week with a lower-body injury, according to a source.

It is currently unclear how Korpisalo got injured, considering he has yet to play a game this season. The Rangers did practice on Wednesday, but there weren't any reports about anyone being banged up. From what I could recall while I was at the opening-night game in Boston on Tuesday night, it didn't look like anything happened in warmups that could have aggravated him.
The team had an optional skate Thursday morning that was mostly composed of the extra skaters.
In case anyone was wondering, Igor Shesterkin is starting in goal tonight for the #NYR.

It's a (very) optional morning skate today. Alberts Smits, Matt Rempe and the three scratched players Tuesday -- Chmelar, Robertson and Morrow -- are the only ones skating.
The Rangers will take on the Tampa Bay Lightning in their home opener Thursday night, the first half of a back-to-back with travel. From there, they head to Michigan to take on the Detroit Red Wings on Friday, where Garand could well get the start in goal.
