Rangers recall Ryan Sproul from Wolf Pack

How much thinner can this blue line get?

Tony DeAngelo’s injury is serious enough that the Rangers have decided to call up Ryan Sproul from the Hartford Wolf Pack. Sproul has played in four games with the Blueshirts this season and picked up two assists in that time. The former Red Wing has also put up 25 points in 44 games with the Wolf Pack this year.

DeAngelo had his MRI done at 11:30 a.m. today. He went into the boards both hard and awkwardly in last night’s 6-3 win over the Hurricanes. DeAngelo is a guy who can’t afford to have this opportunity for NHL ice time be spoiled by an injury. We’ll keep you posted on his status as soon as there’s more news.

There was an also on update on Kevin Shattenkirk’s status today. Apparently the star defenseman has suffered a setback on his road to returning to the lineup, but that might turn out to the best thing for him in the long run. Many believe that there’s no reason to rush Shattenkirk back onto the ice this season. Given that the big ticket free agent signing played so much of the year hurt, it makes even less sense for him to risk further injury with the Rangers out of the playoff hunt. At this point, it’s best to just let him heal up and get healthy.

The Rangers play the Pittsburgh Penguins tomorrow night at the Garden. Needless to say, it will be a big test for a blue line that can’t seem to get or stay healthy.
