Rangers Vs. Bruins: Derek Stepan’s Third Period Goal Pushes Rangers Past Bruins

The New York Rangers came away with a huge 4-3 win over the Boston Bruins, despite being outplayed for a big chunk of the game. Derek Stepan came away with the winning goal at the 12:21 mark of the third period, to the give the East leading Rangers the win.

The Rangers had an excellent start to this game, and were able to put home two goals in the first six minutes of the game. Ruslan Fedotenko redirected home a point shot from Anton Stralman that beat Tim Thomas that 5:05 mark of the first period. The Rangers continued their pressure, and would get the second goal of the game just a minute later.

Dan Girardi flipped the puck down ice, which seems to be a play the Rangers like to run a lot. Carl Hagelin came flying in, grabbed the puck and threw it out front of the net, which banked off of Greg Zanon and into the net. The goal was first credited to Brandon Dubinsky, but was later changed to Carl Hagelin’s goal.

After a surging start to the game, the Rangers momentum was interrupted by a battle between Brandon Prust and Milan Lucic. Lucic definitely got the better of Prust, who was at a mismatch from the start. From there, the Bruins gained momentum that they would not give up until at least the third period. Benoit Pouliot would eventually cut into the Rangers lead following the fight, and made way for a very interesting game.

The first period was cut short due to a crack in the glass, that sent both teams to the locker rooms with 2:53 to play. After the ice was resurfaced, the two teams played out the final 2:53 then switched ends to play the second period. The only goal in the second period came from Jordan Caron would blasted a slap short past Henrik Lundqvist on the short side.

About half way through the game, the Rangers were whistled down for a questionable too many men penalty. There were two or three players that were going off for a line change, but were all within at least an inch of the bench. The same thing occurred on the Bruins tying goal, but this one went against the Rangers. However, the Rangers were able to kill it off and get out of the period with a tie game.

Just 3:14 into the third period, Marian Gaborik put the Rangers back on top with great persistence around the net. Gaborik just missed on a 3-on-1, but stayed around the net where he would eventually find the puck and slip it behind Tim Thomas.

David Krecji would tie the game once again for the Bruins off of a bad bounce in front. Dan Girardi went to block the initial shot from Milan Lucic that bounced over to David Krecji would put it into the empty net. The Rangers responded fairly quick and Derek Stepan would absolutely snipe Tim Thomas from the top of the face-off dot.

Michael Del Zotto made a great play to gain the zone and drop it back to the trailing Stepan who would rip it home. Anyways, what game would it be without Milan Lucic running around at the end of the game? Well it happened once again, Lucic took a very blatant run at Ryan McDonagh as the final horn was about the sound.

It looked as if he was aiming for the head, and McDonagh took exception, which good reason. Lucic then proceeded to sucker punch McDonagh right in the face after the horn had sounded. How’s that for an ending to these intense Bruins/Rangers game?

Henrik Lundqvist was pretty sloppy this afternoon, and was letting a lot of rebounds out, that he would normally eat up. Although, the Rangers once again found a way to win and it couldn’t have come at a better time. The Rangers will be in action again on Tuesday when they face-off against the New Jersey Devils.
