Rangers vs. Capitals: Matt Hunwick OUT Today, Chris Summers Recalled

The New York Rangers will have a new face in the lineup today as Chris Summers is set to make his debut at Madison Square Garden.

According to Andrew Gross, Matt Hunwick will be out of the lineup this afternoon after suffering an upper-body yesterday against the Boston Bruins. As a result, the New York Rangers have recalled defenseman Chris Summers from Hartford on an emergency basis, and he is scheduled to be in the lineup this afternoon.

Summers was acquired back on March 1 in the Keith Yandle deal, which sent prized prospect Anthony Duclair, John Moore, a 2016 1st-round pick, and a 2015 2nd-round pick to the Arizona Coyotes. The decision to recall Summers over the likes of Dylan McIlrath, Michael Kostka, or even Conor Allen is surprising to say the least. All three of those defensemen have been playing rather well down in Hartford, and it's a little bit confusing as to why it wasn't one of them being recalled.

That being said, this feels like a "let's see what he's got" type of decision from the coaching staff, as they will be able to get their first glance at Summers. Obviously there were better choices to choose from at this point in the season, especially with the Rangers still needing to secure home ice in the playoffs as well.

Either way, what's done is done, and we'll get to see what Summers will bring to table in his Rangers debut.

Thought's on this?
