Rangers vs Ducks: Rangers’ Offense Breaks Out With 5-1 Win Over Anaheim

The New York Rangers snapped their three-game losing streak this afternoon with an impressive 5-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks. New York’s offense broke out today and added five goals on a depleted Anaheim lineup that was missing their three top scorers. Henrik Lundqvist had a relatively light game in the crease and turned away 19 of the shots he faced throughout the day.

1st Period

Filip Chytil (9) - Brendan Lemieux (8) & Brady Skjei (10) - 7:14 1st Period

The Rangers were clearly ready right from the opening puck drop today and they immediately jumped on Anaheim in the offensive zone. Filip Chytil was able to grab the puck in transition off of pass from Brendan Lemieux and flew through the neutral zone with plenty of speed. Chytil was able to walk right around Adam Henrique, dropped his shoulder driving to the net, and roofed a shot over Ryan Miller to make it 1-0 Rangers.

Brett Howden (4) - Tony DeAngelo (18) & Artemi Panarin (25) - 8:45 1st Period

A little over a minute later, the Rangers added their second goal of the afternoon from Brett Howden, who was bumped up in the lineup with Kaapo Kakko sitting out with an injury. Tony DeAngelo did an excellent job of getting a shot on goal, and the rebound kicked right out into the open ice. Howden, who had just jumped off of the bench, flew right to the loose puck and slammed home his fourth goal of the season.

Sam Steel (3) - Ondrej Kase (11) - 9:58 1st Period

Unfortunately for the Rangers, the Ducks were able to jump right back into the game despite being out-shot 15-3 in the period. An ill-advised turnover by Micheal Haley in front of the net gave the Ducks a chance, and they made the most of their opportunity. Sam Steel was able to capitalize on the rebound off to the right of Henrik Lundqvist and swatted the puck out of the air to make it a one-goal game.

Chris Kreider (9) - Unassisted - 12:16 1st Period

Chris Kreider closed out the high-scoring first period with a great defensive play at his own blue line, and transitioned the puck in the opposite direction. Kreider was able to burn Josh Manson with his high-end speed, broke in all alone on Ryan Miller, and tapped the puck home with a move to his backhand.

2nd Period

Chris Kreider (10) - Mika Zibanejad (14) - 16:09 2nd Period

Chris Kreider didn’t slow down after adding a goal in the first period, and picked up his second of the afternoon late in the second period. Mika Zibanejad set up the entire sequence with a great pass from the the right corner of the ice. Kreider simply drove the net with his stick on the ice, and tapped the puck past Ryan Miller. Kreider had multiple opportunities to complete the hat trick, but just couldn’t find the handle on a few of the chances.

3rd Period

Mika Zibanejad (12) SHG - Ryan Strome (23) - 1:16 3rd Period

The Rangers continued their offensive pressure early in the third period and wound up adding a shorthanded goal to the boxscore. Mike Zibanejad was able to catch the Ducks off guard in the offensive zone, and turned that opportunity into the fifth goal of the afternoon. Zibanejad attempted a pass in front to Jacob Trouba, but the puck caught a piece of the defenseman, and deflected in behind Ryan Miller. It was a bit of a fortunate bounce, but the Rangers certainly created their luck today with their strong play.

It was a great response today by the Rangers after dropping their last three games. New York did catch a bit of a break with Anaheim missing some key pieces, but they were able to control the game and handled their business. Following today’s impressive win, the Rangers will be right back in action tomorrow night with a game against Alain Vigneault and the Philadelphia Flyers.
