Rangers Vs. Flyers: Henrik Lundqvist And The Rangers Shut Down Flyers
The New York Rangers came away with their second straight win this weekend, with a 2-0 shutout over the Philadelphia Flyers. The Rangers played excellent defense today, and absolutely shut down the top of line for the Flyers. Henrik Lundqvist stood tall today, and walked away with his 40th career shutout.
Right off the puck drop, we saw Brandon Prust and Zach Rinaldo drop the gloves just four seconds into the game. Meanwhile, Sean Avery and Wayne Simmonds were mixing it up at center ice. Brandon Prust set the tone of this game, with the decision over Rinaldo.
Just ten minutes later, Brandon Prust dropped the gloves once again, this time with Wayne Simmonds. Simmonds was running around all game, which Prust put an end to. Prust took the decision once again, and got three to four good shots in. We ended the first period scoreless.

With a power play carrying over from the first period, the Rangers went back to work. About 45 seconds into the period, the Rangers scored, but it was quickly waived off and reviewed. The review showed that Ryan Callahan pushed the puck into the net with his glove, and the goal was disallowed.
Just a couple seconds later, Brad Richards converted on the power play, with a great shot from the circles. Ryan Callahan did a great job in front, setting up the screen in front of Sergei Bobrovsky. With about seven minutes left in the second period, Danny Briere took a cheap shot at Michael Del Zotto. Rinaldo was hit with his own team mates stick, and Briere went back at Del Zotto. Briere hit Del Zotto in the face with the cross check, and it sent him to the box for two minutes.
Five minutes in the third period, Carl Hagelin notched his first goal in the NHL, and it came at the right time. The Rangers needed this clutch two goal lead, and they got it from Hagelin. John Mitchell made a great play to get it back to Ryan McDonagh who threw it on net. Bobrovsky had a tough time with the shot and Hagelin buried it after two shots at it.
As I stated earlier, the defense was absolutely perfect tonight. They gave literally no ice to Claude Giroux and the Flyers top line. Henrik Lundqvist was also solid tonight to preserve the shutout. The Rangers will have a few days off before taking on the Pittsburgh Penguins this Tuesday at MSG.
