Rangers Vs. Flyers Recap: Big Win Over Flyers Comes With Unfortunate Cost

The New York Rangers were able to put together their first two game winning streak of the season tonight, huge 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. While it's all good and great to come away with two points, there is still some serious concern surrounding captain Ryan Callahan. Callahan left the game after a fight with Max Talbot, and was heavily favoring his left shoulder. There was no immediate update on the captain just yet, but we're expected to get a better idea sometime tomorrow.

Now onto the recap of the game. The Rangers were able to jump out to an early 1-0 lead as Michael Del Zotto blasted home a point shot through a screen. Ilya Bryzgalov never caught of glimpse the puck as he was screened by his own defenseman. Benn Ferriero also picked up his first assist as a New York Rangers on the goal as well. I know we said this last game, but the Rangers played their most complete game as a team again tonight. I'm sure you'll be hearing that quite often if they continue to play like they have been.

The Rangers carried their one goal lead until the 11 minute mark of the second period, when Ryan Callahan delivered on the power play. Michael Del Zotto made a great feed to Rick Nash in the slot, where Nash drew triple coverage and fired a shot on net. Bryzgalov was unable to handle the rebound and Callahan chipped it home. Prior to the goal, the Rangers were able to gain some serious momentum as they killed of a 5-on-3 power play. Jeff Halpern was sold at the top of the triangle, and was able to hold off the Flyers without a stick for a majority of the penalty kill.

A sold 40 minutes were in the books and the Rangers were 20 minutes away from their second straight victory on home ice. Unfortunately, the Flyers turned it around, and turned it around quite a bit. For the first several minutes, the Flyers were able to pin the Rangers in their own zone, and it eventually lead to a bench minor for too-many men. On the ensuing penalty kill, the Rangers made a horrible mistake and had all four guys in the corner, which left Kimmo Timonen by himself at the hash marks. Wayne Simmonds was able to chip the puck out of the corner and it landed right on the stick of Timonen. Timonen ripped it off the cross bar and down into the net to cut the Rangers lead to a single goal.

The Rangers would eventually need to kill off two more power plays, and gained a ton of momentum in the closing minutes. With the crowd behind them the entire way, the final buzzer sounded and the Rangers came away with their second straight victory. Henrik Lundqvist played a solid game between the pipes, and it finally looks like he's coming back into his normal form.
